Softball opens with big win, close loss

ROCHESTER, Minn (February 25, 2012) - UW-Stout had the bats going in a 12-3 season-opening win, but then couldn't string together enough runs in the second game of the day in a 5-3 loss to Concordia-Wisconsin, Saturday at the Rochester, Minn., Sports Bubble.

Alison Gray (Jr, St. Cloud, Minn) led the Blue Devils' attack against Bethel, rolling with four runs batted in. Hannah Sweet (So, Elk River, Minn) collected three RBI as Gray, Sammy Peterson (Sr, Hudson) and Erin Moss (Jr, Munster, Ind) each had a solo home run.

Tara Kimberly (Sr, Baldwin) picked up the win, striking out seven.

Against Concordia, the teams tied at one apiece after one inning, the Falcons took a 4-1 lead with a three run third inning. The Blue Devils got one back in the bottom of the third when Peterson rapped out her second home run of day, hitting twice as many round-trippers as in her previous three years. Both teams added another run, with Stout getting their final run in the bottom of the sixth..

Courtney Richardson (So, Miltona, Minn) and Jessica Nicol (Jr, Eau Claire) each collected an RBI.

The Blue Devils will play a doubleheader with Macalester College, Sunday, Feb. 26 in Rochester, Minn.
