Blue Devils comeback to tie with Saints

Stout down 4-0 in second, four goals by four players forge tie

DULUTH, Minn (February 17, 2012) - UW-Stout scored four unanswered goals to forge a 4-4 tie with second seeded and 12th ranked St. Scholastica in the quarterfinals of the NCHA/Peters Cup Tournament, Friday, at Mars Lakeview Arena.

The game did not start well for Stout (8-16-2) as St. Scholastica (14-7-5) chased Blue Devil starter Tom Lescovich (Jr, Clifton Park, NY) by tallying three first period goals. The Saints opened the game with a goal by Alex Valenti in the first minute, then added another at 12;23 by Branden Bradford.

The Saints took a 3-0 lead with a shorthanded goal by Dave Williams at 16:19 of the first period. Tyler Miller scored a power play goal at 1:20 of the second period to give the Saints a 4-0 lead, the only goal Stout's Nick Hopper (Jr, Culver City, Calif) would allow.

The Blue Devils began their scoring assault late in the second period when Zach Vierling (Fr, Coon Rapids, Minn) scored at 18:22, with assists by Garret Grimstad (Jr, Rochester, Minn) and Sam Carr (Jr, Roseau, Minn). Carr cut the lead in half with a goal at 4:47 of the third period. he as assisted by Vierling and Grimstad.

Stout pulled to within one goal at 15:33 when Grimstead scored unassisted. Chris Stafne (So, Duluth, Minn) tied the game at 18:10, with assists by Casey Kirley (So, Hayward) and Jordan Tredinnick (Fr, Onalaska).

Hopper finished the game with 32 saves. Lescovich had seven saves. The Saints' Colin Rundell had 42 saves.

The teams will meet again Saturday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. in the first of two games. The winner will advance to the semi-finals Saturday, Feb. 25. If the teams tie again, there will be a 20-minute mini-game.
