MENOMONIE (November 30, 2012) -
Zach Vierling (So, Coon Rapids, Minn) picked up his own rebound and gave UW-Stout a 2-1 overtime win over St. Scholastica Friday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.
With time winding down in the overtime period, Vierling attacked at the left side of Saints' goalie Colin Rundell, hitting the pads. Vierling picked up the short rebound and fired it past Rundell for the game-winning goal with 53 seconds remaining in the overtime period. The marker was Vierling's first game-winner as a Blue Devil.
Both teams had opportunities over the first two period, but the Saints' Rundell and Stout's
Nick Hopper (Sr, Culver City, Calif) stopped everything sent their way. Hopper was especially tough early and throughout the game. Hoopper finished the game with 38 saves, making 13 saves in the first period, 12 in the second and 13 in the third. The Stout defense held Scholastica to no shots on net in the overtime period. The Saints twice sent shots clanging off the pipe during the game.
Rundell didn't need to contend with near as many shots, but he did stop seven in the first period, six in the second, 10 in the third and two in the overtime session. Rundell finished with 25 saves.
The Saints (3-6-0, 1-4-0 NCHA) drew first blood in the game, which didn't come until the third period. Brett Corcoran scored at 1:34 of the third period, getting an assist from Alex Valenti.
Stout evened the score at 12:53 when
Sam Carr (Sr, Roseau, Minn) scored, getting an assist from
Tate Rusk (Fr, Brainerd, Minn).
Vierling gave the Blue Devils the win when he took a pass from
Garrett Grimstad (Sr, Rochester, Minn), and fired twice to notch the win.
Stout was 0-for-2 on the power play, while St. Scholastica was 0-for-5 on the advantage.
The two teams will meet Saturday, Dec. 1 at 4 p.m. at the Dunn County Ice Arena.
