2012-13 BLUE DEVILS (4-3-2): Stout is coming off a loss after stringing together four wins to kick off November. That streak included three home victories, two of which were over ranked teams.
Nick Hopper has been a brick wall in the net, winning his past three starts and is still undefeated this season. He is maintaining a GAA of .194 and a .937 save percentage, numbers that rank second and first, respectively, in the NCHA. Hopper was recently named the NCHA Player of the Week for his efforts against 12th-ranked St. Thomas and 14th-ranked UW-Superior. In the two wins, he allowed just two scores, both power play goals. Stout is out-scoring their opponents, 28-26, despite being outshot by a 6-to-5 ratio. Through nine games, 16 players have scored goals for the Blue Devils and 19 have recorded at least one point.
Kevin O'Donnell and
Garret Grimstad lead the way with five and four goals, respectively. O'Donnell also leads the squad with nine total points. Five Blue Devils have two goals including
Jordan Tredinnick, Jason Cohen and
Sam Carr, who each have seven points.
Tom Lescovich has spent four games in the goal, collecting one win and three losses. He has a GAA of 3.75 and a save percentage of .904. |

STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT: The Blue Devils split a series with UW-Superior, winning the home game, 4-1, Nov. 16, but dropping the game at Superior, 6-4, Nov. 17.
Nick Hopper was named the NCHA player of the week, Nov. 19, in part, because of his play in the win over Superior. Hopper stopped 32 shots and the only goal allowed was a 6-on-3 opportunity by the Yellowjackets. In the win, Stout scored the first four goals of the game, the first two while on the power play. Stout spent a lot of time in the penalty box that night, but the penalty kill was nearly flawless, killing off 7-of-8 opportunities. At Superior, trailing 4-1, Stout scored three goals to knot the score, only to see the Yellowjackets score the final two goals, one on an empty net. |

Corcoran currently has four goals and six assists. Brenden Koytek has four goals and five assists. Tyler Miller has matched Corcoran for the team lead in assists with six and has one goal. Colin Rundell has worked the majority of minutes between the pipes, posting a goals against average of 2.78 with a saves percentage of .919. |

THE SAINTS' LAST TIME OUT: With St. Scholastica trailing going into the third period, junior captain Brandon Nowakowski netted a pair of goals Nov. 24 in the MCHA/NCHA Thanksgiving Showcase for a 2-1 win over Marian University. The first 30 minutes of the contest would go scoreless until the Sabres got on the board with 9:43 left in the second period on a Matt Berger power-play goal. That would be the score at the second intermission with the Sabres holding a slight edge in shots 25-22. The third period belonged to the Saints as they would out-shoot Marian 15-7. Nowakowski scored the equalizer on the power-play less than four minutes into the period. His brother, Dylan Nowakowski and Brenden Kotyk had the assists. Then with less than four minutes remaining in the period Nowakowski had the game winner with 3:48 left to make the final score 2-1. Brett Corcoran and Justin Krabben were credited with the assists. For the weekend, Nowakowski finished with four goals and two assists. Colin Rundell made 31 saves to earn the win for the Saints. Randy Willis had 35 saves in the loss for the Sabres (4-5-1). Both teams committed six penalties and both were 1-for-6 on the power-play. The night before, the Saints easily handled Lawrence, taking a 9-2 win as Nowakowski and Brenden Koytek each netted a pair of goals. |

THE SERIES: The Blue Devils hold a 21-14-5 lead in the series, but the last time the Blue Devils defeated Scholastica was Nov. 13, 2010, with a 4-1 win in Menomonie.
LAST TIME WHEN THEY MET: The teams met five times last year, with the Saints holding a 3-0-2 record, with three games going into overtime. In a two-game series in St. Scholastica in November, the Saints won the first meeting of the year, 8-6. The following night, the teams played to a 3-3 tie. In the only game in Menomonie last year between the two teams, Scholastica took a 3-2 win. The teams met in the NCHA quarterfinals in February, the opening game of the series was a 4-4 tie. The Saints finished the Blue Devils' season with a 3-2 win when Tyler MIller scored 1-minute, 19-seconds into the overtime period.
RECORDS AND MILESTONES: Tom Lescovich is currently 233 saves shy of 2000 for his career. Only two Stout goalies have ever reached that milestone: Tad Larson (2480) and Jeff Dotson (2226). Additionally, at the beginning of the season, Lescovich was third in team history in save percentage (.911). So far this year, he is maintaining a .904 average. All-time leader Mike Stone's career percentage was .916...
Sam Carr needs to duplicate his assist total from last season in order to pass Joel Gaulrapp and current head coach
Terry Watkins for fourth all time in assists. He currently has 5 assists, and 12 more would put him at 55 for his career. Also, Carr needs to match his jersey number, 24, in games played this season in order to hit the 100-game milestone for his career. The last player to do so was his brother, Robert Carr, along with two others in the 2010-11 season. Coincidentally, Robert played in 27 games his final season, which matched his jersey number as well...
Charles Lachance has previously spent 161 minutes watching from the penalty box. Lachance moved into fifth place earlier this season and could grab the fourth spot with 29 more. He needs 39 minutes to move into elite company, as the 200-minute club is currently occupied by just three Blue Devils. Lachance was quickly moving towards infamy as he spent 27 minutes in the box in Stout's first five games, but has recently been a bit more tame.
AWARDS AND HONORS: Nick Hopper was named the NCHA player of the week, Nov. 19, after posting a pair of wins over nationally ranked St. Thomas and UW-Superior. Hopper was also named the UW-Stout athlete of the week.
NOVEMBER: Since the 2007-08 season, November has treated the Blue Devils well. They have won more games in the month of November than any other month and have the best winning percentage in this month as well. They have 25 victories over the past 5 and a half Novembers out of 40 games played, a .625 winning clip. So far this November, they are perfect at home and have just one loss. October is the closest competitor with a winning percentage of .526. Looming over the horizon is December, which has traditionally been Stout's worst month (.437).
THE COACHES: Terry Watkins (201-221-28) is in his 17th season as the head coach of the Blue Devils' varsity program. Watkins spent eight years coaching the club team (104-102-16) as Stout prepared to return to varsity status in 1997. Watkins was the 2006-07 NCHA coach of the year when Stout finished in a three-way tie for first. Watkins had a Hall of Fame career at Stout as a defenseman. Stout won a WIAC title in 2010-11, and an NCHA title during the 2006-07 season
. Mark Wick is in his ninth season as the Saints' head coach. Wick is the winningest coach in Saints' history, having accumulated 106 wins in his first eight seasons. Last year, Wick earned NCHA Coach of the Year honors, an award he was also given after the 2008-09 season.
THE CONFERENCES: Stout and St. Scholastica are both members of the seven-team Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA). They are also a member of the five team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The WIAC is made up of Stout, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Superior and UW-River Falls. The NCHA includes the five WIAC schools as well as St. Norbert and St. Scholastica. This is the final year of the existance of the NCHA.
HOME ICE ADVANTAGE: Since the 2006-07 season, UW-Stout is 52-23-5 at the Dunn County Ice Arena.
2011-12 BLUE DEVILS: UW-Stout was all over the map last year, as they kept fans guessing which Stout team would show up. The Blue Devils started the season 4-1, and were 4-2 after three weekends of play. They went 1-5-1 over their next seven games, however, and went into the Christmas break 5-7-1. Stout showed signs of life later in the year as they split of pair of closely-contested games with then fourth-ranked UW-River Falls, and played a lot of close games down the stretch. The Blue Devils grabbed just one win in their final eight regular season games before being bounced in the first round of the NCHA playoffs by the College of St. Scholastica. Stout returns seven of their top eight scorers from last season, but lose All-American
Branden Gay, who served as the team's leading scorer the past two years.
Sam Carr, an All-NCHA selection a year ago, led the team in assists and will look to distribute the puck again in his senior year. Carr also scored four goals, giving him 21 points on the season, trailing only Gay. Teammate
Mike Hartviksen gathered 20 points on 10 goals and 10 assists. Four other Blue Devils scored at least 16 points, all of whom will return this season.
Kevin O'Donnell collected 19 points,
Jordan Tredinnick, 18, while
Garrett Grimstad and
Charles Lachance each added 16.
Nick Hopper and
Tom Lescovich, who will both return for their senior year, split time between the pipes last season. Each appeared in 15 games, and had very similar stat lines. Lescovich finished 5-8-0 with a save percentage of .891, while Hopper ended the season 3-9-2, with a .907 save percentage. |
