MENOMONIE (January 27, 2012) - UW-Stout's
Nick Hopper (Jr, Culver City, Calif) stopped 17 consecutive shots to open the game, but the shots starting finding their mark as the Blue Devils dropped a 4-2 decision to UW-Superior Friday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.
The Yellowjackets (9-8-4, 4-6-4 NCHA) outshot Stout (7-12-1, 3-9-1 NCHA), 42-18 for the game and opened up the contest by outshooting the Blue Devils 19-1 in the first stanza.
The Yellowjackets finally pierced Hopper's armor in rapid succession in the first period. Derek Stauber scored at 16:03 and just over a minute later, Zach Maxwell got a power play goal to give Superior a 2-0 lead at the break.
Superior's Josh Kesler delivered on a penalty shot four minutes into the second period and Justin Faryna gave the 'Jackets a 4-0 lead on a pwer play at 7:29.
The Blue Devil offense started to show some life in the period.
Chris Stafne (So, Duluth, Minn), with assists by
Jason Cohen (Jr, Anchorage, Alaska) and
Jordan Tredinnick (Fr, Onalaska) at 10:44.
Less than two minutes later,
Mike Hartviksen (So, Thunder Bay, Ont) found the back of the twine, getting an assist from Cohen and
Sam Carr (Jr, Roseau, Minn).
Hopper finished the night with 38 saves. Stout outshot Superior in the third period, 9-7. The Yellowjackets' Drew Strandberg had 16 saves.
Stout will host St. Scholastica, Saturday, Jan. 28 at 4 p.m.
