Tennis team picks up season's first win

Abby Werwie stays perfect after three matches

UW-Stout 8, University Dubuque 1 | St. Ambrose 6, UW-Stout 3

DUBUQUE, Iowa (September 5, 2011) - UW-Stout picked up their first win of the season and Abby Werwie (Jr, Kenosha) stayed perfect at No. 1 singles as the Blue Devils competed in a pair of matches at the University of Dubuque Monday.

Werwie paced the Blue Devils, leading the 8-1 rout over host Dubuque, with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over the Spartans' Nichole Schmaltz. Werwie then stayed perfect on the season with an identical 6-1, 6-2, win over St. Ambrose's Amanda Gomez.

Stephanie Schick (Sr, Altoona) won at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 1-6, 10-4. Emily Grossen (So, Monroe) won at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-2, and Sammie Swanson (So, Eau Claire) posted the same score at No. 5 singles. Elizabeth Lehnertz (So, Cary, Ill) breezed through No. 6 singles, dropping only one set, 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles, Werwie combined with Katie Sorensen (Jr, Neenah) at No. 1 to blank Schmaltz and Heather Watson, 8-0. Grossen and Swanson won at No. 2 doubles, 8-3, while Lehnertz and Jenna Heilman (Fr, Lake Mills) won at No. 3 doubles, 8-5.

Following the match with Dubuque, the Blue Devils were tripped up by St. Ambrose, 6-3. Werwie was joined in the winners' circle by singles players Grossen and Lehnertz. Grossen defeated Staci Kapinus at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-1, and Lehnertz won at No. 5 singles over Karissa Kalous, 6-1, 6-2.

Sorensen suffered a pair of hard luck losses at No. 3 singles. Against Dubuque's Ashley Schlueter, she lost 7-6, 7-6, and against St. Ambrose's Heather Matejka, Sorensen lost in three sets, 6-7, 6-1, 10-3.

Stout returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 7 when they are scheduled to open WIAC play by hosting UW-River Falls at 3 p.m. at the South Tennis Courts.
