MENOMONIE (May 2, 2011) - UW-Whitewater was battling to stay in the WIAC title chase and the Warhawks stayed there with a clean sweep of UW-Stout, 9-0, 13-2, Monday at Alumni Field.
The Warhawks (26-8, 11-5) needed to win both games to have a chance to tie for the conference crown. Whitewater chipped their way to a first game lead, scoring two runs in the second third and seventh innings, and three runs in the sixth. The Warhawks recorded 17 hits and struck out 12.
In the second game, Whitewater went up 2-0 in the first inning, but Stout (16-22, 3-13) cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning when
Alison Gray (So, St. Cloud, Minn) doubled in
Courtney Richardson (Fr, Miltona, Minn), who reached with a lead off single. Gray recorded three of Stout's total eight hits on the day
But Whitewater would go on to score in every inning, tallying three runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings, and two in the third.
Stout will close out their season, Wednesday, May 4 when they travel to Hamline University.
