MENOMONIE (May 1, 2011) - After allowing 17 runs in the first game, the UW-Stout softball team virtually shut down UW-Oshkosh's offense in the second game and garnered a split with the Titans Sunday at Alumni Field. The Titans won the first game, 17-8, while Stout needed only six inning for a 9-1 second game win.
The Titans pounded out 19 hits in the opener and scored in five of the seven inning but opened the spiggot for scoring in the seventh inning when they broke out with eight runs, lacing Stout with eight hits.
But
Tara Kimberly (Jr, Baldwin), who took the first game loss pitching 1.2 innings, ignored the cold, blustery elements and scattered five hits and no earned runs to earn the second game win.
Stout (16-20, 3-11) scored three runs in the first inning as
Sammy Peterson (Jr, Hudson) scorched a one-out triple, then came home on
Shanen Stainer's (Fr, Menomonie) single.
Kelly Conway (Sr, La Crescent, Minn) drew a walk and
Hannah Sweet (Fr, Elk River, Minn) drove both home with a double up the middle.
Stout added two runs, taking advantage of an Oshkosh error in the second inning when Stainer doubled in a pair of runs for a 5-0 lead. Oshkosh got their only run in the fourth inning, but Stout neutralized that when Conway drove in a run.
The Blue Devils added a trio of runs in the bottom of the sixth to close out the game.
Courtney Richardson (Fr, Miltona, Minn) led off with double, then came home on a single by Peterson to make the score 7-1.
Alison Gray (So, St. Cloud, Minn) reached on a throwing error and advanced to second, while Peterson moved to third. Stainer connected on a sacrifice fly to center field to score Peterson and Gray moved to third. Conway, Stout's only senior, sent a sacrifice fly to right field to score Gray, who slid around the tag to end the game.
Stainer was 3-for-4 with four RBI to lead Stout. Conway and Sweet each had two RBI. Kimberly struck out two and walked no batters, Sydney Wyss and Jamie Braden each had two hits for Oshkosh.
In the opener, the Titans' Braden was 4-for-5 with three RBI. Kaelyn Hogan was 2-for-5 with four RBI, Wyss, Koebler and Marti Meyer each had two hits.
Sweet had three RBI for Stout in the first game, going 2-for-4, while Stainer drove in a couple of runs. Conway was 3-for-4. Richardson and Peterson each had two hits.
Stout will close out the home schedule Monday, May 2 when they host UW-Whitewater at 1 p.m.
