ROSEMOUNT, Minn (March 2, 2011) - UW-Stout's seventh inning rally fell short in game one, then an offensive output in game two wouldn't be enough as the Blue Devils lost both ends of a doubleheader to Augsburg College, 5-3, 12-6, at the Irish Sports Dome Wednesday.
In the opener, Stout trailed 5-0 heading into the fifth inning when they tacked on their first run of the day when
Alison Gray (So, St. Cloud, Minn) drove in
Shanen Stainer (Fr, Menomonie) with an infield hit just over the third baseman's head.
Stout (3-3) kept the Auggies off the board in the final two inning, then rallied in the bottom of the seventh. The Blue Devils loaded the bases and Gray walked to bring in a run.
Hannah Sweet (Fr, Elk River, Minn) drove in Stainer to keep the bases full, but the Auggies got out of the inning without anymore damage and the win.
Stout opened the second game with some offensive fireworks. Stainer hit a lead off home run to center field and Sweet drove in a run later in the inning to give Stout a 2-0 lead.
But the Auggies answered back, with the help of two Stout errors, to take a 4-2 lead, including a leadoff home run by Jessa Hinz. The Auggies tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second before Stout tallied a run in the third on another RBI by Sweet.
The Auggies made it 7-3 when Stout tallied three runs in the fourth. The Blue Devils loaded the bases and
Jessica Behnke (Fr, Bruce) delivered a pinch hit two run single. Stainer added a sacrifice fly to pull the Blue Devils to within 7-6. But the Auggies answered again in each of the final three innings, putting up a run in the fourth, then a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Stout finished the game with 11 hits, but Augsburg run up 17 hits. Sweet finished the day for Stout going 3-for-8 with three RBI. Gray was 4-for-7 and Stainer was 3-for-7 with three runs scored.
Stout will be off until they head to Clermont, Fla., for their annual spring break trip where they are scheduled to play 10 games. The Blue Devils will open with Bethel University and Concordia, Wis, University, Saturday, March 12.
