Softball team opens with a split

Blue Devils drop first, come back to win second game

ROSEMOUNT, Minn (February 18, 2011) - UW-Stout dropped the season opener, 3-2, in the seventh inning, then bounced back to take the second game, 8-6, in a doubleheader with Northwestern College at the Irish Sports Dome Friday.

The Blue Devils (1-1) had a combined no-hitter going in the first game through six innings when the bottom fell out in the top of the seventh as Northwestern (1-1) tallied three runs. The Eagles moved runners into scoring position with a lead off error, then played small ball to mover runners into scoring position. Briana Rodgers drove in a run with a double and moved Leighana Nyquist to third. Nyquist scored on Jenna Ruby's groundout to the pitcher. Lauren Walker delivered what wout be the game-winning RBI on a single up the middle.

Stout would get their chances. Shanen Stainer (Fr, Menomonie) reached on a lead-off error, then advanced to second on a single by Erika Wolf (Fr, Elmwood). Stainer was forced out and Stout went out in order the rest of the way.

Tara Kimberly (Jr, Baldwin) opened the game in the circle, striking out eight and facing only nine batters over three innings. Bri Conrad (Jr, South St. Paul, Minn) came on in relief and pitched three innings of scoreless ball before giving up three runs, two earned, on two hits, in the seventh inning.

Stout opened the game with a run in the first inning when Hannah Sweet (Fr, Elk River, Minn) delivered an RBI double in her first collegiate at-bat. Stout took the score to 2-0 in the third inning when Kelly Conway (Sr, La Crescent, Minn) tripled in a run.

In the second game, Stout came back from a 3-0 deficit with a six run fourth inning. Sweet had a one-out solo home run. Wolf drove in a run and Brittany Reiter (Fr, Eau Claire) bunted in a run. Olivia Schroeder (So, Eau Claire) sacrificed in a run and Alison Gray (So, St. Cloud, Minn) finished off the scoring with a two-run home run.

Stout took a 7-3 lead in the fifth on a solo shot by Conway, then add to weather a three-run sixth inning by the Eagles, getting three runs on five hits and an error. Stout's final run came in the seventh inning when Gray scored on an error.

Catcher Sam Hastings (Fr, Waukesha) was 3-for-6 on the day and Conway was 3-for-8 with two RBI. Gray had a pair of RBI, going 2-for-5. Sweet was 2-for-6 with two RBI on a double and a home run. Stout hit three home runs on the day, one each by Gray, Conway and Hastings.

Stout returns to the Irish Sports Dome Thursday, Feb. 24 when they play St. Olaf College.
