DULUTH, Minn (December 3, 2011) - UW-Stout and St. Scholastica traded goals in each period and the Saints scored the final goal of the game to forge a 3-3 tie Saturday afternoon at Mars Lakeview Arena.
Stout's
Garrett Grimstad (Jr, Rochester, Minn) scored a pair of goal to lead Stout 's offensive charge, but it was the Saints that opened the scoring when Jeremy Dawes scored eight minutes into the first period. Grimstad would come back to tie the game five minutes later.
The Saints' Brett Corcoran scored midway through the second period and Grimstad scored his second goal of the game two minutes later to tie the game at 2-2.
Stout (5-5-1, 2-3-1 NCHA) took their only lead of the game when
Branden Gay (Sr, Calgary, Alberta) scored his ninth goal of the season, this one coming four minutes into the third period.
The Saints (6-2-2, 2-2-2 NCHA) took advantage of a Stout penalty for the tie when Corcoran scored his second goal of the game, this one coming with 41 seconds left in the game.
Both teams had opportunities in the overtime period with Stout putting four shots on net and St. Scholastica three. Stout's
Nick Hopper recorded 11 saves, while St. Scholastica's Colin Rundell notched 22 saves.
Stout returns home next weekend for the first time in more than a month when they will host UW-Stevens Point, Friday, Dec. 9 and Saturday, Dec. 10. Both games are slated for a 7:30 p.m. game.
