Superior takes weekend opener over Stout

SUPERIOR (November 18, 2011) - UW-Stout cut the lead in half with a goal in the third period, but UW-Superior scored twice in the period to salt the game away and take a 4-1 conference win over the Blue Devils Friday at Wessman Arena.

The Yellowjackets (4-1-2) scored at least one  goal in each period and got the first goal of the game with 21 seconds remaining in the first period when Cody Hotchkin put the puck past Stout goal Tom Lescovich (Jr, Clifton Park, NY).

Superior doubled the score in the second period with a goal with one minute left in the stanza on a Pat Dalbec goal.

The Blue Devils (4-4-0) got on the board at the 8:53 mark in the third period to cut the lead in half as Mike Hartviksen (So, Thunder Bay, Ont) scored with assists by Sam Carr (Jr, Roseau, Minn) and Alex Breeden (Fort Collins, Colo). But Superior scored twice for the win on goals in the third period by Brett Meyers at 14:32 and by Justin Faryna at 16:05.

Lescovich finished the contest with 22 saves as shots were fairly even, with the Blue Devils outshooting the Yellowjackets, 27-26. Superior goaltender Drew Strandberg had 26 saves.

The teams will meet again Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m.
