Blue Devils answer back in big way for win

MENOMONIE (October 21, 2011) - UW-Stout scored six unanswered goals and went on to a 6-1 season opening win over Concordia University of Wisconsin Friday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

Concordia opened the scoring quickly with a Russell Johnson goal four minutes into the game.

After that, the UW-Stout defense limited the Falcons shots to almost nil. Concordia had six shots in the first period and ended the game with 16 shots on net.

Nine minutes into the game Stout answered with last year's leading scorer, Branden Gay (Sr, Calgary, Alberta), scored with assists Sam Carr (Jr, Roseau, Minn) and Jordan Tredinnick (Fr, Onalaska). Four minutes later, captain Mike Hartviksen (So, Thunder Bay, Ont) scored his first of two goals on the evening.

The Blue Devils pushed in three goals in the second period, with Carr scoring three minutes into the period, Hartviksen scoring eight minutes in and Dan Cecka (So, Woodbury, Minn) scoring two minutes before the end of the period.

Gay scored the final goal of the game six minutes into the third period, with assists from Hartviksen and Carl Bombardier (Fr, Valcourt, Quebec).

Gay finished the night with two goals and three assists. Hartviksen had two goals and one assist. Carr had one goal and two assists. Tredinnick finished with three assists.

Josh Lehr had 46 saves for the Falcons, while Stout's Tom Lescovich (Jr, Clifton Park, NY) recorded 15 saves and Nick Hopper (Jr, Culver City, Calif) played eight minutes and recorded one save.

The Blue Devils will host Marian University, Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m.
