MENOMONIE (January 15, 2011) - UW-Stout pulled to within one goal with just over 30 seconds left in the game, but the Blue Devils could not hold off UW-Superior and the Yellowjackets completed the weekend sweep with an 8-6 win at the Dunn County Ice Arena Saturday.
The Yellowjackets (11-5-1, 8-2-0 NCHA, 7-1-0 WIAC) built a 6-2 lead after two periods, but the Blue Devils came storming back with a four goal third period.
Stout (11-7-0, 6-6-0, 4-4-0) came out on all cylinders in the third period, scoring twice in the first four minutes of the period to pull within 6-4.
Sam Carr (So, Roseau, Minn) scored at 3:11 and
Alex Breeden (Jr, Ft. Collins, Colo) at 3:47 to put Stout back in the game.
But the Yellowjackets answered the attack when Justin Faryna scored at 6:32 to push the advantage back up to three, 7-4.
Stout's
Jason Cohen (So, Anchorage, Alaska) scored at 7:09 to pull to within 7-5. With an extra attacker on the ice,
Garrett Grimstad (So, Rochester, Minn) scored with 47 seconds remaining for a one goal deficit.
The Yellowjackets had the answer again when Brett Meyers scored off the ensuing faceoff seven seconds later and the game was on ice.
The game started off very similar to the night before when the Yellowjackets scored within the first minute of the contest. Pat Dalbec scored 58 seconds into the contest.
But unlike the night before, Stout answered the Superior goal with one of their own when
David Larson (Sr, Warroad, Minn) scored to knot the game. Superior scored two more goals in the second, then took a 4-1 lead 45 seconds into the second period when Dalbec scored his second goal of the night.
Kevin O'Donnell (Fr, Stoughton) scored three minutes later, but Superior hung two more goals on the board late in the second period for the 6-2 lead.
Charles Lachance (So, Quebec City, Quebec) tallied three assists for Stout.
Nick Hopper (So, Culver City, Calif) took the loss for Stout, his first of the season, and recorded 28 saves. Garrett Tinkman had 35 saves for Superior.
Stout returns to action Saturday, Jan. 22 when they travel to Rosemount, Minn., to play St. Olaf College. The game was originally scheduled for the day before.
