MENOMONIE (January 14, 2011) - UW-Superior set the tone when they scored two goals in the first 1-minutes, 16-seconds of the game and the Yellowjackets went on to defeat UW-Stout, 7-2, Friday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.
The Blue Devils (11-6-0, 6-5-0 NCHA) were called for a penalty 45 seconds into the game and the Yellowjackets (10-5-1, 7-2-0) took advantage at 1:09 when Talon Berlando scored. Seven seconds later, Brett Meyers skated uncontested down the left side of the ice and added the second goal.
The Yellowjackets tacked on two more goals early in the second period. Matt Wiest scored the eventual game winner at 3:07 and Jeff Forsythe scored on the power play at 8:25.
The Blue Devils finally showed some offensive life when Russ Whited (Fr, Indianapolis, Ind) punched the puck through at 14:17. Three minutes later, Brandon Gay (Sr, Calgary, Alberta) scored a short-handed goal as he was falling to the ice.
But that would be it for Stout, which was outshot 42-24 on the evening. Forsythe tallied his second power play goal of the evening at 19:17 of the second period. The Yellowjackets scored again on the power play at 13:40 of the third period on a goal by Justin Faryna. Superior lit the board for one more score at 15:44.
Tom Lescovich (So, Clifton Park, NY) took the loss for Stout, recording 14 saves, but giving up four goals.
Nick Hopper (So, Culver City, Calif) came on in relief and turned back 21 shots, giving up three goals. The Yellowjackets Garrett Tinkham recorded 22 saves.
The teams will meet again Saturday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
