DUBUQUE, Iowa (September 6, 2010) - The UW-Stout women's tennis team ran their season-opening streak to three when they swept all nine matches at the University of Dubuque Monday morning. But later in the day, their three-game streak was cut short with a 6-3 loss to St. Ambrose.
Callie Mikolajczyk (So, Caledonia) completed the sweep when she battled back from a first set deficit to down Spenser Smith, 4-6, 6-2, 8-6 at No. 6 singles.
Freshman
Samantha Kletscher (Brainerd, Minn) ran her record to 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-3, win over Emma Bridgett at No. 3 singles.
Allie Hinman (Sr, Lino Lakes, Minn),
Abby Werwie (So, Kenosha) and
Katie Sorensen (So, Neenah) each extended their singles marks to 3-0. Hinman won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Werwie won at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-0, and Sorensen won at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-3.
Hinman and Werwie stayed perfect at No. 1 doubles with an 8-0 win.
But the Blue Devils (3-1) were stung in the afternoon match with St. Ambrose as Hinman and Werwie were the only Stout player to pick up wins.
Hinman defeated Amanda Gomez, 6-2, 6-1, in Hinman's closest match so far of the season. Werwie won her first set at No. 2 singles, then dropped the second before battling back to take the tie-breaker to defeat Rachel Sarafin, 6-4, 0-6, 10-8.
The duo won their No. 1 doubles match 8-2 over Gomez and Adrianne Foley.
Kletscher and Sorensen both lost their first contest of the season. Kletscher lost, 6-4, 6-4, to Chelsea Allborough at No. 3 singles and Sorensen took Heather Matejka to three sets before bowing out, 6-0, 3-6, 10-7 at No. 5 singles.
The Blue Devils are off until Thursday, Sept. 16 when they host UW-Eau Claire at 3:30 p.m.
