Pointers bounce back to take second game

UW-Stout 2, UW-Stevens Point 1 | UW-Stevens Point 10, UW-Stout 4

STEVENS POINT  (April 26, 2010) - Freshman catcher Alison Gray (St. Cloud, Minn) hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to lift UW-Stout over UW-Stevens Point, 2-1, Monday in the first game of a doubleheader at Zenoff Park.  The Pointers bounced back in a big way to take the second game, 10-4.

With the score of the first game tied at 1-1, Gray led off the sixth inning with the solo shot to right field, the  fourth consecutive game Gray has homered.

The Pointers (20-14, 4-8) took the early lead when Katie Krueger hit a RBI single in the second inning.

Stout (12-20, 3-9) tied the score in the fifth inning when Lacey Joslin (Jr, Sturgeon Lake, Minn) drew a one-out walk, then moved on Olivia Schroeder's (Fr, Eau Claire) sacrifice bunt. Joslin stole third, then came home on Kat Nelson's (So, Chippewa Falls) double.

Kristy Hoffman (Sr, Circle Pines, Minn) recorded her third consecutive win in as many games, scattering seven hits to seven different Pointers, walking two and striking out two.  Stout was held to four hits, with the first four batters - Nelson, Jamie Olson (Fr, Eau Claire), Gray and Kelly Conway (Jr, La Crescent, Minn) each getting a hit.

In the second game, the Pointers sent 13 batters to the plate in a seven-run third inning. The inning included four Stevens Point hits, two Stout errors, a passed ball and two wild pitches.

Trailing 10-1, Stout themselves bounced back in the fifth inning with two runs - a sacrifice fly by Gray and an RBI single by Conway - to pull to within seven runs and send the game past the potential 8-run mercy rule ending. Stout added a single run in the seventh inning on a solo home run by Olson.

The Pointers outhit Stout, 12-9, again with no Stevens Point player getting more than one hit apiece. Hoffman, who pitched 13 total innings today to push her season total to 197-plus innings pitched, struck out six and allowed six earned runs in the second game. The Pointers' Cassie Krum took the win with two strikeouts.

Stout returns to action Saturday, May 1 at UW-Whitewater and will conclude the WIAC season Sunday, May 2 at UW-Oshkosh.
