Stout takes final two games of Florida trip

Peterson ties game with triple, then wins game

UW-Stout 9, Morrisville 2 | UW-Stout 3, Southern Maine 2 (8 inn)

CLERMONT, Fla (March 25, 2010) - The first game was a lopsided affair and the second game came down to extra innings but they will both go in the win column as the Blue Devils defeated Morrisville State College, 9-2, and the University of Southern Maine, 3-2, on the final day of the National Training Center College Spring Games.

In the eight inning win over Southern Maine, the teams played scoreless ball through seven innings, then needed to go to the international tie breaker to make the decision and all five runs of the game were scored in the inning.

After Southern Maine (2-8) worked for two runs with back-to-back hits, one a triple, in the top of the eighth, Stout 's Sammy Peterson (So, Hudson) played the hero by driving in two runs with a triple to tie the game at 2-2. With two outs, the Huskies then opted to intentionally walk the next two Stout batters to get the force-out at any base. But the strategy backfired when a wild pitch brought Peterson home.

Kristy Hoffman (Sr, Circle Pines, Minn) picked up the win, striking out six - she had 14 total punchouts on the day - allowing six hits and no runners past second base from the second through the seventh innings.

Against winless Morrisville (0-11), the Blue Devils notched six runs on five hits in the second inning to take control of the contest. Jenna Johnson (Sr, Menomonie) drove in two runs with a triple in the inning and Kat Nelson (So, Chippewa Falls), Peterson and Kelly Conway (Jr, La Crescent, Minn) each drove in a run.

The Mustangs scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning to pull to within 6-2. Johnson recorded her third RBI of the day with a one-run double in the sixth inning. Jess Grobe (Jr, Millville, Minn) got the completely free ride around, drawing a walk, then advancing around to home on a pair of wild pitches. Stout scored their final run of the game in the top of the seventh when Nelson rapped a triple and Lacey Joslin (Jr, Sturgeon Lake, Minn) brought her home with a single.

Hoffman got the win by striking out eight, walking none and allowing three hits.

Stout is off until Wednesday, March 31 when they travel to Luther College.
