ROSEMOUNT, MInn (March 11, 2010) -
Jenna Johnson (Sr, Menomonie) went 5-for-8 with four ground rule doubles and
Morgan Beyer (So, Medford) was 4-for-7 with four runs batted in as UW-Stout pounded out 27 hits in a 12-4, 7-4, doubleheader sweep of St. Olaf Thursday at the Irish Sports Dome.
In addition,
Kelly Conway (Jr, La Crescent, Minn) was also 5-for-8 on the day and
Alison Gray (Fr, St. Cloud, Minn) was 4-for-7 to boost Stout's offensive fire.
The Blue Devils (4-4) came from behind in the first game as the Oles got to eventual winning pitcher
Kristy Hoffman (Sr, Circle Pines, Minn) when Ali Berens jacked out a two run home run in first inning. The Blue Devils cut the score in half when Conway drove in
Sammy Peterson (So, Hudson) in the bottom half of the first.
The Oles (0-2) jumped out to a 3-1 lead when pitcher Katy Truax singled in a run in the top of the third.
The Blue Devils took the lead with a four run third inning as
Jess Grobe (Jr, Millville, Minn), Beer and
Jamie Olson (Fr, Eau Claire) drove in runs. Stout rolled in four more runs in the fourth inning. A Johnson bouncer over the fence drove in two with a ground rule double, Beyer drove in another run and
Sam Sarna (So, Buffalo, Minn) scored on an error as Stout took a 9-3 lead.
Hoffman worked through the fifth inning when she gave way to
Jess Nicol (Fr, Eau Claire) in the sixth. Nicol gave up a lead off home run, then struck out the next three batters, two looking. The Blue Devils ended the game in the bottom of the sixth by scoring three runs, with Olson - on a sacrifice fly - Sarna and Peterson driving in runs to end the game on the 8-run rule.
Hoffman struck out three and scattered five hits for the win. The Blue Devils pounded out 16 hits off two St. Olaf pitchers. The Oles hurt their own cause with four errors.
Stout's onlslaught continued into the second game with 11 hits. Stout jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a five run, three-hit second inning. Stout played small ball with two sacrifice bunts and Johnson collected another double.
Beyer gave Stout a 7-0 lead in the fourth inning with a two-run single.
The Oles reached Hoffman - who pitched the entire second game - for four runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth.
Hoffman settled down and allowed only two more base runners the rest of the way as she struck out five in the game while walking two.
Gray had three htis in the game and Beyer had two with two RBI.
The Blue Devils are off until they head to the Orlando, Fla., area for their annual spring break trip when they play 10 games between March 20 and March 25
