MENOMONIE (November 12, 2010) - UW-Stout was hot out of the gate, but then had to hold off St. Scholastica as the Blue Devils took a 7-5 home opening win Friday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.
Stout (4-3-0, 1-2-0 NCHA) jumped out to a 4-0 first period lead, getting two even goals, a power play goal and a shorthanded goal. Both teams scored twice in the second period, but St. Scholastica scored three goals in the third period to pull to within 6-5 before Stout's
Sam Carr (So, Roseau, Minn) scored with less than two minutes left in the game to give the final two goal cushion.
Dan Cecka (Fr, Woodbury, Minn) opened the scoring 1:23 into the game,
Branden Gay (Sr, Calgary, Alberta) doubled the six minutes into the contest with a power play goal.
Sam Carr scored his first goal of the game a minute later and brother
Robert Carr (Sr, Roseau, Minn) scored shorthanded midway through the period.
The Saints (2-3-0, 0-3-0) broke onto the scoreboard, opening the second period with a goal by Garet Chumley just a minute after the intermission.
Robert Carr scored his second goal of the game a minute later to extend Stout's lead to 5-1 and
Chris Stafne (Fr, Duluth, Minn) extended the lead to 6-1 with the Blue Devils' second shorthanded goal of the night, this one coming at 10:46 of the second period.
Then it was all St. Scholastica until the final minutes of the contest as the Saints scored four consecutive goals. Brett Corcoran scored at 16:28 of the second. Riley Riddel scored on the power play at 2:57 of the third. Eric Kraft scored at 14:04 and Neil Sauter pulled the Saints to within one goal at 15:59.
St. Scholastica took a penalty at 17:31 - only their third of the game - and Stout made them pay when
Sam Carr put the game out of reach 40 seconds later.
The Blue Devils chased starter Patrick Sullivan midway through the second period. Sullivan gave up six goals and stopped 11 shots. Colin Fisher came on in relief and stopped five and gave up the final goal.
Stout's
Tom Lescovich (So, Clifton Park, NY) recorded 36 saves and combined with the special teams to turn away six of seven St. Scholastica power play opportunities.
The two teams will meet again Saturday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Menomonie.
