Marian University 6, UW-Stout 5
FOND DU LAC (October 25, 2010) - Goals for both teams came in packs, especially in a six goal first period, but Marian University packed a few more together as the Sabres defeated UW-Stout 6-5 Monday at the Blue Line Family Ice Center.
The first period was the wildest of the three as Stout jumped out to a 2-0 lead within the first two minutes of the game as
Branden Gay (Sr, Calgary, Alberta) and
Danny Ryan (Sr, Niles, Ill) scored. But the Sabres came back with three goals - two within a minute of each other around the four minute mark - to take the lead.
Ryan scored his second goal of the period at 16:47 to knot the game heading into the first break.
Stout took the lead three minutes into the second period as
Matt Morin (So, Brooklyn Center, Minn) scored. But in less than a minute later, Marian tied the score at 4-4 when Todd Collins scored at 4:16.
The Sabres (1-0-0) took a two goal lead in the third period when Matt Williams scored at 10:26 and Brendan Roberts added a shorthanded goal at 14:51.
Stout (1-1-0) took advantage of a power play opportunity with three minutes left in the game when
Chris Stafne (Fr, Duluth, Minn) scored to pull to the Blue Devils to within one goal, but even with an extra attacker on the ice, Stout could not get the equalizer.
Four different Blue Devils scored goals and eight different players notched assists. Kevin O'Donnell (Fr, Stoughton) and
Justin Giles (So, Jenks, Okla) each had two assists.
Tom Lescovich (So, Clifton Park, NY) recorded 32 saves for the Blue Devils, while Alex Bjerk had 22 for the Sabres.
Stout will play a weekend series as they open the NCHA season Oct. 29-30.
