Young tennis team nipped in season opener

Blue Devils fall 5-4 in match with Green Knights

St. Norbert 5, UW-Stout 4

EAU CLAIRE  (September 5, 2009) - A very young UW-Stout tennis team was nipped, 5-4, by St. Norbert College in both team's season opener Saturday morning at the UW-Eau Claire tennis courts.

Stephanie Schick (So, Altoona) was edged in the third set of her match at No. 5 singles by Maria Slusarek, 11-9, i the final game of the match. Schick won the first set, 6-3, but lost 6-1 in the second set before staying even throughout the third set.

Allie Hinman (Jr, Lino Lakes, Minn) won both of her matches, defeating Kelly Van Handel at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-2, and teamed with Abby Werwie (Fr, Kenosha) at No. 1 doubles for an 8-1 win.

Freshman Erin James (Menomonie) had a tight match at No. 3 singles, dropping the first set, 6-2, then coming back for a 6-3 win. She took the final set, 10-7.

Freshman Anna Eckhardt (Greendale) won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 4 singles.

Stout will play two matches in Dubuque, Iowa, Monday, Sept. 7, facing Calumet College of St. Joseph and Dubuque.
