Blue Devils roll over Simpson College in opener

Warminski scores twice, Devils add three big 2nd half scoring plays

MENOMONIE (September 5, 2009) - Craig Warminski (So, Stanley) scored twice in the first half, and three players scored on big plays in the second half to lift UW-Stout to a 35-7 season opening win over Simpson College Saturday at Don & Nona Williams Stadium.

Warminski scored on an 8-yard run three minutes into the game, but set up the play with a 25-yard reception from sophomore quarter Ross Carey (Little Suamico).  Warminski added a score just before halftime, scoring on a 33-yard run down the Blue Devils' sideline.

Stout got big scoring plays in the second half.

Adam Winberg (So, Coon Rapids, Minn) scored his first touchdown as a Blue Devil, making a leaping grab in the front corner of the end zone on a 30-yard pass play to put Stout out in front, 21-7, with seven minutes left in the third quarter.

The Blue Devils put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter. Tight end John Sherman (Sr,Cokato, Minn) rambled for 50 yards on a  pass from Carey at the 12 minute mark of the fourth and, three minutes later,  Carlos Concepcion (Jr, Milwaukee) ran for the longest play of the day, a 70-yard run, again down the Blue Devil sideline.

Simpson's only score came at 8:03 in the second quarter when Renauld Shelton slipped in from the one-yard line to tie the score at 7-7. The 38-yard drive was set up when John Wolfe intercepted a Carey pass, and returned it to the Simpson 47. A personal foul on the Blue Devils moved the ball to the Stout 38.

Andrew Jeske (Sr, Glenwood City) stopped a Simpson drive midway through the third quarter when he intercepted a pass in the end zone.

Stout tallied 450 total yards, 299 coming on the ground and 151 in the air. The Blue Devil defense held Simpson to 209 total yards, 106 by rush, 103 by pass.

Concepcion led all rushers with 124 yards on eight carries. Warminski tallied 88 yards on the ground in 19 totes. Carey accumlated 51 yards rushing, getting most of that on a 27-yard jaunt. Carey completed 7-of-14 passes for 132 yards.  Winberg had three receptions for 46 yards and Sherman had two grabs for 46 yards.

For the Storm, quarterback Tyson Unkrich rushed for 59 yards and completed 8-of-17 passes for 90 yards, his longest pass a 43-yard reception by Legrand Bien-Aime.

Ryan Pearcy (So, Plover) had eight tackles. Linebacker Brian Saaf (Sr, Bloomington, Minn) had the day's only sack, and had four tackles, three for loss. Cody Jensen and Braden Everding each had 11 tackles for the Storm.

Stout will be at Jamestown College, Saturday, Sept. 12 for a 1 p.m. contest.
