Stout 11, Superior 3
SUPERIOR (April 21, 2009) - UW-Stout had their biggest offensive output in more than a month as they took two games at UW-Superior Tuesday, 6-4, 11-3.
The 11 runs scored in the six-inning second game was Stout's most in a single game since a 15-8 win over St. Olaf on March 10.
Five run innings were the key for the Blue Devils in both games. Stout used a five-run fifth inning in the opener to overcome a 2-1 deficit and a five-run first inning in the nightcap set the tone that the Yellowjackets could never recover.
Stout (16-18, 6-8) took advantage of two Superior (10-16, 1-11) errors to open the second game. Nelly Peterson (Sr, Cumberland), who went 4-for-5 in the second game, drove in a run. Peterson scored along with Jenna Johnson (Jr, Menomonie) when winning pitcher Laura Vanderhoof (Fr, Mankato, Minn) tripled.
Stout scored a single run in the fourth inning, then added two in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Kat Nelson (Fr, Chippewa Falls), Lisa Reiter (So, Elgin, Minn) and Vanderhoof each had two hits as Stout collected 14 hits. Vanderhoof struck out five and recorded her first win since the spring break trip.
In the opener, Nelson keyed the fifth inning with a two-run, no out single. Peterson and Kelly Conway (So, La Crescent, Minn) each had an RBI in the inning and Peterson eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Kristy Hoffman (Jr, Circle Pines, Minn) worked into the sixth inning and struck out six before giving way to Vanderhoof, who worked two innings for the save.
Nelson was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored in the game.
The Blue Devils will host Carleton College, Thursday, April 23 at 4 p.m. at Alumni Field.
