LA CROSSE (April 18, 2009) - A day after recording their first conference sweep in two seasons, UW-Stout found themselves on the short end of the scorecard as they lost twice at UW-La Crosse by identical 8-0 scores.
In the opener, the game was scoreless until La Crosse scored a single run in the fourth inning. The Eagles (25-9, 10-4) added four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to end the game early.
Kristy Hoffman (Jr, Circle Pines, Minn) allowed five hits over the first four innings, but the Eagles reached her for five hits in the fifth inning. The Eagles ended the game on a three-run double by Cara Salm in the sixth.
Stout (14-18, 4-8) had three hits in the game, while La Crosse pounded out 13. Stout comitted three errors, one in each of the last three innings.
In the second game, the Blue Devils were handcuffed for only one hit, a lead-off single by Kat Nelson (Fr, Chippewa Falls) in the fourth inning.
The fourth inning proved to be the only inning the Blue Devils had any kind of scoring threat. Trailing 6-0, Nelson led off with the single, then moved to second when Sammy Peterson (Fr, Hudson) reached safely on an infield error. Following two infield pop-ups, Peterson and Nelson advanced a base on a passed ball. Kelly Conway (So, La Crescent, Minn) drew a walk to load the bases, but all three runners were stranded.
The Eagles scored a solo run in the first inning, then broke out for five runs in the second. A two-run double by Jenna Ahnen ended the game in the fifth. The Eagles had 13 hits off two Blue Devil pitchers.
Stout will be at UW-Superior, Tuesday, April 21, then will host Carleton College, Thursday, April 23. Stout's final home game will be Sunday, April 26 when they host UW-Stevens Point at noon.
