Stout earns road sweep over Pioneers

Second game is a come-from-behind win

PLATTEVILLE  (April 17, 2009) - UW-Stout led from the get-go in game one, then mounted a late come-from-behind win to earn a sweep at UW-Platteville, 6-1, 4-2, Friday.

In game won, Sammy Peterson (Fr, Hudson) drove in three runs and Kristy Hoffman (Jr, Circle Pines, Minn) scattered six hits and allowed no runs until a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh as the Blue Devils won, 6-1.

Peterson drove in two runs with a double in the Blue Devils' four-run first inning, then added another run in Stout's two-run fifth inning. Hoffman helped her own cause, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI in the first inning. Kelly Conway (So, La Crescent, Minn) drove in a run in the first inning and scored twice in the game, going 1-for-2, while drawing two walks.

Carrie Kearney (Fr, Rosemount, Minn) cut down two runners attempting to steal.

Hoffman provided a good share of the offensive firepower in the second game, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Pioneers (5-23, 0-10) jumped out to 2-0 lead, scoring their only runs in the third inning. Tera Burr drove in a run with a triple and Chantal McReynolds plated her with a groundout.

The Blue Devils (14-16, 4-6) got three runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run triple by Hoffman. Jess Grobe (So, Millville, Minn) singled in Hoffman one batter later to make Jenna Johnson (Jr, Menomonie) a winner.

Stout got an insurance run in the seventh inning. Sammy Peterson reached on a two-out double and Nelly Peterson (Sr, Cumberland) brought her have with a single to right field.

Johnson allowed four hits and the two earned runs. She struck out three. Laura Vanderhoof (Fr, Mankato, Minn) came on to pick up her first save of the season, striking out two and not allowing a hit in two innings of work.

On the day, Hoffman was 5-for-7 with three RBI.

The sweep was Stout's first of a conference opponent since defeating UW-Superior, April 19, 2007.

Stout will be at UW-La Crosse, Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m.
