LAKE PLACID, N.Y.  (March 20, 2009) - Gustavus Adolphus scored in overtime to defeat UW-Stout, 3-2, in a NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey semi-final Friday at the Olympic Center.

Patrick Dynan scored two goals for Gustavus; a power play goal in the first period and the overtime game winner 6-minutes, 31-seconds into overtime.

Dynan scored the first goal of the game, and it took until the second period when he beat Stout's Matt Koenig (Sr, Lakeland, Minn) five minutes into the period on the power play.

Three goals were scored in the second period, all power play goals.

Stout's first line answered back six minutes later when Joel Gaulrapp (Jr, Owatonna, Minn), with assists from Scott Motz (Jr, Lake Elmo, Minn) and Derek Hanson (Jr, Bemidji, Minn) broke the ice for Stout.

But the Gusties (19-10-0) answered back only three minutes later on a goal by Eric Bigham.

The Blue Devils (23-6-2) tied the game with six minutes left in regulation on a goal by Motz, with assists by Nick Klaren (Sr, North St. Paul, Minn) and Hanson. With his two assists tonight, Hanson broke the school career record for assists. Hanson now has 64 career assists, breaking Greg Fecho's mark of 62 from 1976-80.

Matt Lopes and Josh Swartout combined to stop 32 shots by UW-Stout. Koenig had 35 saves for Stout.

"I am disappointed and very proud," said Stout head coach Terry Watkins. "We had a great season. Being on a stage like this is all new to us. You could see the nerves. You just don't walk into a game like this and play your best. Next time, we will know what it feels like.

"Coming to a national tournament like this, this is the kind of game you want," Watkins added. "If the score was 6 or 7 to 1, that wouldn't have been fun. A 3-2 overtime game is good for everyone. This has been a tremendous educational and athletic experience for our kids."

Gustavus Adolphus will play Neumann College, a 2-0 winner over Hobart, in the championship game, Saturday, March 21.
