Stout opens season at 5-3 in four trips to Rosemount

ROSEMOUNT, Minn.  (March 10, 2009) - After losing the first game, 4-2, the UW-Stout softball team bounced back late in the second game to secure a 15-8 win over St. Olaf in the second game at the Irish Sports Dome Tuesday. 

The Blue Devils overcame an 8-6 second game deficit with a six-run fifth inning, then added three more runs in the sixth inning for good measure.

Stout (5-3) opened the game with two runs in the first inning, as Sammy Peterson (Fr, Hudson) and Kelly Conway (So, La Crescent, Minn) each drove in runs. Stout extended the lead to 6-0 with four runs in the second inning. Winning pitcher Laura Vanderhoof (Fr, Mankato, Minn) led off with a home run. Conway and Peterson each drove in their second runs of the game, and Nelly Peterson (Sr, Cumberland) added a sacrifice fly.

But the Oles (1-3) cut the lead in half, getting to Vanderhoof for three runs in the third, then took the lead with a five-run fourth inning.

In a sixth run fifth inning, Kat Nelson (Fr, Chippewa Falls) drove in two runs with a double. Vanderhoof doubled in a run. Carrie Kearney (Fr, Rosemount, Minn) drove in a run on a fielder's choice.  Conway drew a walk for her third RBI of the game and Sammy Peterson scored on a wild pitch.

Sammy Peterson keyed a three-run sixth inning with a two-run single and Nelly Peterson drove in Sammy Peterson for the final run of the game.

The late offensive outburst game Vanderhoof enough cushion to pick up her fourth win of the season. Jenna Johnson (Jr, Menomonie) threw two innings of hitless bll and struck out four in relief.

In the opener, the Oles got their first win of the season with one run in the first and three in the third. 

Stout rallied in the seventh inning when Katie Fichter (Sr, Baraboo) hit a two-run home run for the Blue Devils' only runs of the game.

Stout will travel to Florida to play in the Rebel Spring Games near Orlando. The Blue Devils play Washington & Jefferson in a doubleheader, Saturday, March 14, and Endicott College and Millikin University, Sunday, March 15.

 

UW-Stout 9, Augsburg 2 | Augsburg 7, UW-Stout 3

ROSEMOUNT, Minn  (March 4, 2009) - Nelly Peterson (Sr, Cumberland) hit a grand slam and Katie Fichter (Sr, Baraboo) hit a three-run home run as UW-Stout defeated Augsburg College, 9-2, in game one a doubleheader Wednesday at the Irish Sports Dome. The Auggies came back to take a 7-3 second game win.

Trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, Peterson crushed the bases-loaded pitch to left field to put Stout (4-2) ahead for the rest of the game.

Fichter followed suit after Carrie Kearney's (Fr, Rosemount, Minn) drove in a run to put runners on third and first. Fichter parked the pitch beyond the left field fence.

Augsburg (1-3) took the lead in the game in the top of the third, when Kylee Persing drove in two runs. Stout cut the lead in half when Kelly Conway (So, La Crescent, Minn) scored on a fielding error.

Laura Vanderhoof (Fr, Mankato, Minn) recorded her third win of the season, giving up two runs and striking out six over four innings. Kristy Hoffman (Jr, Circle Pines, Minn) recorded a save working the last three innings.

Kat Nelson (Fr, Chippewa Falls) was 3-for-4, while Conway, Peterson and Jenna Johnson (Jr, Menomonie) were each 2-for-4. Kearney was 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

The Auggies picked their way to the win in the second game, scoring a single run in the top of the first, then two runs each in the third, fifth and seventh innings.

Trailing 3-0 heading into the fourth, Stout knotted the score with three runs. Nelson, Kearney and Kaitlin Helgaas (So, Fond du Lac) notched RBIs for Stout. Augsburg took the lead for good in the fifth inning on RBIs by Laura Strandell and Melissa Larson. 

Stout left the bases loaded in both the sixth and seventh innings. Johnson took the hard-luck loss, coming in when the scored was tied, and surrendered two runs, one earned. She struck out three. 

Stout closes up their four-date Irish Sports Dome tour, Tuesday, March 10 when they will meet St. Olaf. Stout is scheduled to play 10 games during spring break, March 14-20, near Orlando, Fla.

 

UW-Stout 13, Northwestern 3 (5 inn) | UW-Stout 7, Northwestern 3

ROSEMOUNT, Minn.  (February 26, 2009) - UW-Stout swept a doubleheader over Northwestern College, 13-3, 7-4, Thursday at the Irish Sports Dome in Rosemount, Minn.

In the opener, Kelly Conway (So, LaCrescent, Minn) crushed a three-run home run, her first collegiate home run, in a four-run fourth inning and Kaitlin Helgaas (So, Fond du Lac) scored twice in an eight run first inning as the Blue Devils pounded the Eagles, 13-3 in five innings.

Kat Nelson (Fr, Chippewa Falls) had two hits - an RBI double and a two-out single - in the opening frame and Carrie Kearney (Fr, Rosemount, Minn), playing on her home high school turf, hit a two-run single in the inning. The Blue Devils rolled up 11 hits and allowed four.

Laura Vanderhoof (Fr, Mankato, Minn) pitched three innings and surrendered two hits, but no runs, in striking out three to snag her second win of the season. 

In the second game, Stout drove in two runs with bunts in a three-run fourth inning. Kristy Hoffman (Jr, Circle Pines, Minn) drove in Lisa Reiter (So, Elgin, Minn) with a bunt single. Hoffman scored moments later and Cassie Lewan (Fr, Thorp) scored on Vanderhoof's one-out sacrifice squeeze.

Stout added two runs in the fifth inning when Nelly Peterson (Sr, Cumberland) scored on a three-base error and Jenna Johnson (Jr, Menomonie) drove in Conway with a double to centerfield. Hoffman recorded the win.

Stout returns to the Irish Sports Dome, Wednesday, March 4 to take on Augsburg College.

 

UW-Stout 9, St. Scholastica 1 (6 inn) | St. Scholastica 8, UW-Stout 1

ROSEMOUNT, Minn.  (February 20, 2009) - Nelly Peterson (Sr, Cumberland) hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give UW-Stout a 9-1, six-inning win over St. Scholastica as both teams opened the 2009 season at Irish Dome in Rosemount, Minn, Friday.

The pop by Peterson also plated Kat Nelson (Fr, Chippewa Falls) and ended the game in the sixth inning on the eight-run rule. Laura Vanderhoof (Fr, Mankato, Minn) pitched the final three innings to earn the win by not allowing a run. Kristy Hoffman (Jr, Circle Pines, Minn) allowed a first inning run, but shut the Saints out the rest of the way.

Stout produced a five-run fifth inning that helped them break a 28-game losing streak, stretching back to last season.

The tables turned in the second game as the Saints took an 8-1 victory with Jenn Falk going the distance for the win. Merryssa Tiedeman hit a three-run home run in a four-run third inning. The Saints also tallied single runs in the first and sixth innings and two runs in the fifth.

Peterson accounted for Stout's only run of the game, an RBI single in the top of the sixth.

Stout will return to the Irish Dome, Thursday, Feb. 26 to face Northwestern College.
