Blue Devils pull out another, down Scholastica, 3-2

MENOMONIE  (February 28, 2009) - UW-Stout had St. Scholastica right where they wanted them.

Trailing, 2-1 in the third period, the Blue Devils put on yet another come-from-behind win as Nate Klaren (Sr, North St. Paul, Minn) scored the game-winning goal with seven minutes left in the game to give Stout a 3-2 win over St. Scholastica, Saturday and advance to the championship game of the NCHA Peters Cup tournament.

Stout (21-5-2) opened the scoring when Derek Hanson (Jr, Bemidji, Minn) scored on the power play midway through the first period.

But the Saints (20-6-2) answered back five minutes later on a goal by Jordan Baird.

The Saints took the lead three minutes into the third perod on a power play goal by Chris Meager, but Stout tied the game only 46 seconds later when Matt Morin scored, with assists by Jack Wolgemuth (Sr, Anchorage, Alaska) and David Larson (So, Warroad, Minn). 

Klaren got the game-winner at the end of a power play opportunity, getting an assist by Larson. The goal was Klaren's first goal since Dec. 6, 2008, in a 4-3 win over Lake Forest in Menomonie.

Stout's Matt Koenig (Sr, Lakeland, Minn) picked up his 19th win of the season by stopping 22 shots. St. Scholastica's Steve Bounds had 27 saves. 

The 21 wins for Stout matches a school record set during the 2007-08 season when Stout went 21-5-2.

The Blue Devils will travel to UW-Superior, Saturday, March 7 to participate in their second consecutive Peters Cup final.
