Blue Devils sweep Blugolds in Peters Cup series

MENOMONIE  (February 21, 2009) - UW-Eau Claire outshot UW-Stout nearly 2 to 1, but Stout won the game, 2-1, on a Joel Gaulrapp (Jr, Owatonna, Minn) goal with seven minutes left in the game to give Stout the sweep over the Blugolds in the quarterfinals of the NCHA Peters Cup tournament Saturday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

The Blugolds (13-13-1) outshot Stout 34-18, but Stout (20-5-2), after spotting Eau Claire a first period goal, scored a goal in the first and the third period.

Tyler Weigel got the Blugolds on the board six minutes into the game. Derek Hanson (Jr, Bemidji, Minn) tied the score just before the first period break, getting assists from Gaulrapp and Scott Motz (Jr, Lake Elmo, Minn).

Stout put 10 shots on net in the second period, but could not pierce Blugold goalie, Tyler Brigl. It wasn't until 13 minutes inot the third period that Gaulrapp got the eventual game-winner with assists by Motz and Hanson.

Stout goalie Matt Koenig (Sr, Lakeland, Minn) stopped 33 shots, with 15 saves coming in the third period. Koenig ran his record to 18-4-2. Brigl made 16 saves for Eau Claire.

Stout will host third seeded St. Scholastica, Saturday, Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m.
