MENOMONIE  (February 20, 2009) - Perhaps the key is to spot the opponent alead heading into the third period.

For the second consecutive game, UW-Stout came from behind to pull out a win, this time a 5-3 win over UW-Eau Claire in the quarterfinals of the NCHA Peters Cup Tournament.

Trailing 3-1 early in the third period, the Blue Devils (19-5-2) scored four unaswered goals - two each by Jeff Wheeler (Sr, Bainbridge, Wash) and Joel Gaulrapp (Jr, Owatonna, Minn) - to take the win.

The Blugolds (13-12-1) opened the third period with a goal by Skylar Christoffersen two minutes into the period when Christoffersen shot from behind the net and hit Stout goalie Matt Koenig (Sr, Lakeland, Minn) on the back and the puck dribbled in.

The play woke up the Stout offense. Wheeler scored the next two goals, one at 4:46 and the next one, a shorthanded goal, at 7:57. Gaulrapp scored two minutes later for a 4-3 lead, then scored unassisted to put the game on ice with 42 seconds left in the game on a 4-on-4 opportunity.

The Blugolds started off the scoring midway through the first period when Greg Petersen scored on the power play.

Stout did not get on the board until halfway through the second period when Matt Morin (Fr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) scored with an assist by Bobby Kuehl (Jr, St. Paul, Minn). The Blugolds grabbed the lead back six minutes later when Skylar Christoffersen scored to take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.

Koenig recorded 30 saves, while the Blugolds' Tyler Brigl had 29 saves.

The best of two games series will continue tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. A 20 minute mini-game will be played, if needed. The winner advances to the NCHA semi-final game, Saturday, Feb. 28.

Ticket prices are $6 for general admission, $3 for students (with ID) and senior citizens.

The game will be produced in a live video stream by Blue Devil Video. Live Stats will also be available.
