MENOMONIE (November 20, 2009) - UW-Stout jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but then had to hold off UW-Stevens Point in the third period to take a 6-3 win and claim their first conference win of the season.
Stout (3-2-2, 1-2-2 NCHA, 1-0-0 WIAC) opened the game with three goals in the first period, allowing one, then added another to take a big lead.
But the Pointers (2-6-0, 0-5-0, 0-1-0) took advantage of Stout miscues in the final period.
Stout's
Andy Sternberg (Sr, Duluth, Minn) opened the period by scoring a goal just after the Blue Devils killed a power play opportunity six minutes into the period.
Six minutes later, Nick Polaski scored on a delayed penalty to move the score to 5-2. Three minutes later, the Pointers' Jon Madden scored on the power play.
Stevens Point pulled their goal early, and Stout could not get off a good shot at the empty net. The Blue Devils finally iced the game and took advantage of the empty net when
Sam Carr (Fr, Roseau, Minn) launched a shot from the opposite blue line that made a trip into the net.
Derek Hanson (Sr, Bemidji, Minn) opened the scoring in the game, getting a breakaway goal four minutes into the game. The Pointers' Donnie Hallmark got an equalizer three minutes later, Stout added two more goal in the period, one by
Eric Scovill (Jr, Peoria, Ill) and another by
Garrett Grimstad (Fr, Rochester, Minn).
Scott Motz (Sr, Lake Elmo, Minn) scored in the second for Stout.
Tom Lescovich (Fr, Clifton Park, NY) turned away 25 shots for Stout, while Tom Speer had 14 saves for Stevens Point.
The teams will meet again Saturday, Nov. 21 at 4 p.m.
