MENOMONIE (November 21, 2009) -
Joe Beaudette (Fr, Blaine, Minn) sent the game into overtime and
Joel Gaulrapp (Sr, Owatonna, Minn) hit the game winning goal as UW-Stout defeated UW-Stevens Point 5-4 Saturday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.
Stout (4-2-2, 2-2-2 NCHA, 2-0-0 WIAC) and Stevens Point (2-7-0, 0-6-0, 0-2-0) played to a 1-1 tie after two periods, but the flood gates opened in the third period in rapid fashion.
The teams traded goals early in the third period. Stout's
Garret Grimstad (Fr, Rochester, Minn) scored a minute into the period, but the Pointers' Garrett Suter knotted the score at the 4:40 mark. Stout grabbed the lead back at the 5:39 mark on a
Danny Ryan (Jr, Niles, Ill) goal.
The Pointers took advantage of Stout penatlies to grab the lead for the first time in the game. Donnie Hallmark scored at 11:29 and Jon Madden gave Stevens Point the 4-3 lead at 14:24.
Stout pulled their goalie, then took advantage of a Stevens Point penalty with an extra attacker as Beaudette scored with 12 seconds remaining in the game on assists by
Andy Sternberg (Sr, Duluth, Minn) and
Derek Hanson (Sr, Bemidji, Minn) to send the game into overtime.
Again, time was ticking down before Gaulrapp got the winner with 37 seconds left in overtime. He was assisted by Hanson and
Scott Motz (Sr, Lake Elmo, Minn).
Hanson finished the night with three assists, rolling his career points total to 126, two short of the school record of 128 by Glenn LaChapelle.
Tom Lescovich (Fr, Clifton Park, NY) finished the afternoon with 31 saves, while the Pointers' Nick Graves had 33 saves.
Stout will be at the PrimeLink Northern Shootout in Northfield, Vt., where they will face Norwich University, Friday, Nov. 27. They will meet either Middlebury College or SUNY-Plattsburgh the following day.
