EAU CLAIRE (October 24, 2009) - UW-Stout hadn't scored a touchdown in the past two games, and none in regulation since September 26. The Blue Devils hadn't scored a touchdown in regulation during their first three conference games.
The Blue Devils made up for the drought today.
The Blue Devils (5-2, 2-2) scored on their first drive of the game, using three plays of 10 yards or more to move 60 yards in seven plays as
Craig Warminski (So, Stanley) scored on a 9-yard pass from
Ross Carey (So, Little Suamico) just over three minutes into the game. Stout elected to go for the two-point conversion and Carey ran the ball in to give Stout an 8-0 lead.
Stout had another opportunity in the first quarter, but were sacked on fourth-and-goal from the Eau Claire (3-4, 1-3) 2-yard line after driving from their own 20.
The Blue Devils' offense took advantage of good field position in the second quarter, when Warminski scored his second touchdown of the day to cap off a five play, 28-yard drive.
After teams exchanged punts,
Adam Churchill (Jr, Plum City) intercepted his first of two picks in the game, setting up another short field for the offense. Warminski broke a 26-yard run on the second play of the drive, setting up a one-yard Carey touchdown that gave Stout a 22-0 lead with five minutes left in the first half.
The Blugolds battled back by driving for a field goal on the following possession, and then recovered a fumble that they turned into six points, and trailed, 22-9 at halftime.
Stout got off to a good start in the second half, as they forced Eau Claire into a three-and-out on their first possession. The Blue Devils then took the ball 81 yards on their next drive, ending in Carey's second rushing touchdown of the afternoon.
After the Blue Devils' defense forced another punt, Carey hooked up with
Adam Winberg (So, Coon Rapids, Minn.) for a 47-yard completion on the first play of the drive. Two plays later,
Luke Rieger (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn.) caught an 18-yard touchdown pass to give Stout a 36-9 lead.
The Blugolds answered by scoring on the ensuing drive, featuring 85 yards passing from Kyle Paulson. That touchdown, however, would be the final points of the game as Eau Claire could not draw any closer.
Carey ended the day with 72 yards and two scores on the ground. He was also 12-for-17 passing for 170 yards and two touchdown passes.
Warminski ended the game with 167 yards on the ground on 26 attempts.
Churchill's two interceptions give him three in the past two weeks.
With the win, the Blue Devils get their hands on the I-94 trophy, a tradition between the rivals that started last year.
Stout will be on the road again next week, when they will face conference opponent UW-La Crosse in a game on Halloween, Oct. 31.
