MENOMONIE (January 31, 2009) - UW-Stout's Paul Henderson (Jr, Menomonie) and David Larson (So, Warroad, Minn) reversed roles to put UW-Stout ahead and the Blue Devils never trailed after that on their way to a 6-3 win over UW-Stevens Point, Saturday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.
With the Pointers leading 3-2 late in the second period, Henderson fed Larson with a pass to tie the game at 3-3. A minute before the end of the period, Larson found Henderson, who put the puck in the net and Stout took 4-3 lead.
The Blue Devils (15-5-2, 7-2-2) scored two goals in the third period to put the game out of reach. Joel Gaulrapp (Jr, Owatonna, Minn) scored seven minutes into the period. The game was put on ice with less than a minute left when Andy Sternberg (Jr, Duluth, Minn) scored an empty net goal.
The Pointers (13-7-2, 4-6-1) opened the scoring in the first period when Russel Law scored six minutes into the game. The Blue Devils answered two minutes later on Matt Morin (Fr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) power play goal, with assists by Larson and Robert Carr (So, Roseau, Minn).
Stevens Point jumped back out in front in the second period on short handed goal by Taylor Guay. Stout's Joel Whited (Fr, Indianapolis, Ind) moved the score back to even, 2-2, eight minutes into the period with assists by Jeff Wheeler (Sr, Bainbridge, Wash) and Eric Scovill (So, Peoria, Ill).
The Pointers took a 3-2 lead on a power play goal by Tim Manthey with eight minutes left in the second period.
Morin finished the night with two assists and a goal. Stout outshot Stevens Point, 37-20, with the Blue Devils' Matt Koenig (Sr, Lakeland, Minn) making 17 saves and the Pointers' Thomas Speer turned away 32.
The win assured Stout of a first round home NCHA playoff series, Feb. 20-21.
Stout will be at Lake Forest College, Friday, Feb. 6 and at St. Norbert College, Saturday, Feb. 7.
