Blue Devils blast St. Mary's in offensive explosion

WINONA, Minn.  (January 13, 2009) - Wow!!! Just one game after what was probably their poorest performance of the year, the UW-Stout hockey team turned on all the jets as they blasted past St. Mary's University, 12-2, Tuesday, the program's most goals in a single game since an 18-0 win over UW-Eau Claire on Jan. 31, 1978.

Scott Motz (Jr, Lake Elmo, Minn) led the assault with a hat trick, getting two goals in the first period and one in the second.

Stout (11-5-0) scored five goals in the first period and added five more goals in the second period. The Blue Devils scored four goals in the second period within a 3-minute, 4-second time period. Paul Henderson (Jr, Menomonie) scored at 4:36, Eric Scovil (So, Peoria, Ill) scored at 5:19, Motz at 6:45 and Andy Sternberg (Jr, Duluth, Minn) at 7:41.

The seventh ranked Blue Devils also got goals from Robert Carr (So, Roseau, Minn), who started the scoring five minutes into the game, David Larson (So, Warroad, Minn), Bobby Kuehl (Jr, St. Paul, Minn), Joel Gaulrapp (Jr, Owatonna, Minn), Jake Gullickson (Jr, Apple Valley, Minn) and Joel Whited (Fr, Indianapolis, Ind).  

Derek Hanson (Jr, Bemidji, Minn) had four assists, Sternberg had three assists, Gaulrapp and Matt Morin (Fr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) had two and Motz, Rob Mueller (Sr, Buffalo, Minn) and Ben Bengtson (So, Warroad, Minn) each had one.

The Cardinals (1-11-1) did get on the board with Sean Geiger scoring halfway through the second and by Eric Dahl halfway through the third.

Stout outshot St. Mary's, 39-31, Matt Koenig (Sr, Lakeland, Minn) still turning away 29 shots. Mike Soulen had 27 saves for St. Mary's.

The Blue Devils were coming off a 4-1 loss to Concordia-Moorhead last week. The Cobbers had only one win coming into the game.

Stout and St. Mary's will meet again Monday, Jan. 19, in Menomonie. Stout will be at UW-River Falls, Friday, Jan. 16.
