MENOMONIE (November 7, 2008) - Gustavus Adolphus College scored four consecutive goals during the middel portion of the game and UW-Stout could not fully overcome the onslaught as the Gusties gave the Blue Devils a 6-5 loss at the Dunn County Ice Arena, Friday.
Stout's leading scorer Derek Hanson (Jr, Bemidji, Minn) opened the scoring five minutes into the game, scoring on the Blue Devils' first power play opportunity.
But the Gusties (2-1-0) came back five minutes later when David Martinson scored his first goal of the evening. The Blue Devils (4-2-0) seemingly brought the game back under their control with two goals, as Jeff Wheeler (Sr, Bainbridge, Wash) and Jared Britton (So, Regina, Sask) racked up goals. Wheeler answered Martinson's goal about 30 seconds later, then Britton pushed Stout up, 3-1, eight minutes into the second.
Gustavus went on their tear when Matt Schugel, Patrick Dynan and Eric Bigham scored in the second period to push the visitors up, 4-3. Mitch Carlson got a power play goal two minutes into the third for a 5-3 lead.
Nick Klaren (Sr, North St. Paul, Minn) pulled Stout to within one. The Gusties had a goal waved off and Stout's Joel Whited (Fr, Indianapolis, Ind) tied the score six minutes into the third period. Martinson gave the Gusties the win with his second goal of the game - and his second power play goal - midway through the period.
Stout will be in Buffalo, Minn., where they will face off against St. Olaf College. The game will be available on Blue Devil Video, as will both games next weekend when the Blue Devils open NCHA play by hosting UW-Superior, Friday, Nov. 14 and St. Scholastica, Saturday, Nov. 15.
