Ben Staupe was named the 14th head coach of the University of Wisconsin-Stout women’s volleyballl team in March 2022 and holds a 42-36 (.538) record.
UW-STOUT (2022-Present)
Staupe has coached five All-WIAC selections, two WIAC All-Defensive Team selections. In the classroom, Staupe has coached 33 WIAC Scholastic Honor roll honorees, and eight CSC Academic All-District selections. Both seasons the Blue Devils have received the AVCA Team Academic Award.
2024: The Blue Devils went 13-13 in 2024 and qualified for the WIAC Tournament for the first time since the 2018 season. The Blue Devils were 33rd in the nation with 2.03 blocks per set. Brooke McCune was 36th in the nation and third in the WIAC with 3.90 kills per set. She hit .240 on the season and is fifth in the WIAC in overall points with (99.5 and 3.83 points per set. 19 times she recorded double-digit kills and five times totaled 20or more. She tied a school record with 28 kills in a win over UWL. She was named WIAC Attacker of the Week on Oct. 22.
Terrah Moshier was named to the WIAC all-defensive team for the second straight season. She averaged a career-high 4.76 digs a set. Which was third in the WIAC. She recorded double-digit digs in 24 matches and totaled 20+ digs eight times. She was named the WIAC's Defender of the Week on Sept. 10. Emma Barton was 24th in the nation in blocks per set and third in the WIAC with 1.13. She totaled five or more blocks eight times with a career-high nine against No. 7 UW-Oshkosh.
2023: The Blue Devils finished the 2023 campaign with a 17-7 record. They set a school record with 11 straight wins to start the season. They most since 2002 when they started 10-0.
Sidney Hoverman had multiple career-highs this season and was named All-WIAC. She averaged 4.11 kills per set, which was third in the WIAC and 18
th in the nation. She had a .238 hitting percentage with career-low attacking errors. She averaged 4.61 points per set, fourth in the WIAC and 21st in the nation. Hoverman averaged 2.70 digs per set and totaled 40 blocks. She recorded double digit kills in all but two matches, had 12 double-doubles and recorded 20+ kills five times. She was named AVCA National player of the week in early Sept. to become the first Blue Devil to receive the honor. She is ninth all time in total kills in Stout history in just three seasons of play. Terrah Moshier was named to the WIAC all-defensive team.
Brynn Hessel was named All-WIAC honorable mention. She averaged 1.17 blocks per set, good for second in the WIAC and 11
th in the nation.
2022: The Blue Devils went 12-16 in head coach Ben Staupe’s first season at Stout. The Blue Devils played 10 matches where their opponents were either ranked or receiving votes in the top-25 poll. Sidney Hoverman was named All-WIAC and led the Blue Devils this fall with 397 kills accounting for nearly a third of Stout's offense. Sidney averaged 3.82 kills a set which was second in the conference.
BEFORE UW-STOUT
Western Illinois University (2018-22): coaching the Leathernecks for four seasons. Staupe's 2021 team won the most conference meets in more than seven years and two produced two freshman players that earned All-Summit League status, the first time in school history. A stickler in the classroom, Staupe oversaw the program academically improve from a 3.1 GPA his first year to a high of 3.70.
UW-Whitewater (2010-18): Staupe served in various roles before being promoted to associate head coach in 2016. With the Warhawks, he assisted the team to seven straight NCAA Championship appearances crowned by a spot in the Sweet 16 in the 2016 season. The Warhawks program compiled a record of 161-53 during his tenure while winning six WIAC titles. He also coached 20 All-Americans, 31 All-WIAC selections and three WIAC Scholar-Athletes.
Rock Valley College (2001-09): In eight seasons Staupe won 202 games including a record-setting 39-win season in 2008. Staupe was named 2004 AVCA Midwest Coach of the Year, Region and District Coach of the Year twice each and Conference Coach of the Year four times. Staupe led the Golden Eagles to National Runners-up in 2004 and a fifth place finish in 2007. The former head coach coached six NJCAA Academic All-Americans, seven NJCAA All-Americans, 21 All-Region selections and 34 All-Conference selections.
Staupe also served a stint as an assistant coach at NAIA Viterbo University, as well as coaching club volleyball and high school volleyball.
PERSONAL
Following a high school volleyball career at Kettle Moraine High School, Staupe was a member of the UW-La Crosse men's volleyball club as a setter and defensive specialist. Staupe received both a bachelor's and master's degree at UW-La Crosse with a focus on exercise sport science (2001) and human performance (2003), respectively. Staupe and his wife, Kate, have two daughters, Lilah and Ella. Minion and Bagel, their dogs, and Bear, their cat, are also part of the family.
