Mike MacDonald was named the Blue Devils' sixth head hockey coach in June 2020 and holds a 54-64-5 (.459) record.
UW-STOUT (2020-Present)
In five seasons as head coach of the Blue Devils, MacDonald has coached 21 All-WIAC selections, one WIAC Newcomer of Year, and two USCHO.com All-Rookie Team honorees.
In the classroom, MacDonald has coached 95 WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll selections, two CSC Academic All-Americans, 13 CSC Academic All-District selections, 40 American Hockey Coaches Association Krampade All-American Scholars, and two Max Sparger WIAC Scholar Athletes.
2024-25: The Blue Devils went 12-13-2 including four shutout wins. Stout played eight overtime games. The Blue Devils topped #2 St. Norbert 6-2 to open 2025. Jacob Halvorson was named the recipient of the 2025 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men's Ice Hockey Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award. Nicolas Pigeon, a sophomore from Gatineau, Quebec, led the Blue Devils in scoring with 28 points on 12 goals and 16 assists. His 28 points ranked seventh in the WIAC, while his 16 assists were tied for fourth in the conference. A key presence in the faceoff circle, Pigeon also won the third-most faceoffs in the WIAC, solidifying his impact on both ends of the ice. Gunner Moore, a junior defenseman from Las Vegas, Nevada, was a crucial part of UW-Stout's defensive unit while contributing offensively with 14 points. He also led the team with 21 blocked shots, demonstrating his commitment to shutting down opposing attacks. Noe Perez, a senior defenseman from Prévost, Quebec, was another vital piece of the Blue Devils' blue line, finishing the season with 12 points. His 20 blocked shots were second on the team, showcasing his strong defensive play throughout the year.
2023-24: The Blue Devils went 13-14-2 and finished third in the WIAC. Stout had four players receive All-WIAC honors. Boyd Stahlbaum was named WIAC Newcomer of the Year as well as being named to the USCHO All-Rookie Team. He tied for the league lead in goals and was third in assists with 18 to lead the WIAC with 32 points. He led the WIAC with .48 goals a game average and was second with 1.10 points a game. Nicolas Pigeon, a freshman center from Gatineau, Quebec, earned first-team All-WIAC honors. He led the league with 21 assists and was fourth in total points with 29. Noe Perez, a junior defenseman from Prevost, Quebec, led all defensemen in the WIAC in scoring with 19 points. Stout played in a classic WIAC semifinal series against rival UW-Eau Claire. Stout won game one 2-1 and fell in game two 5-2 to force a winner take all mini-game. Stout tied the 20-minute game at one with just over four minutes left to force a sudden death overtime period. After a scoreless overtime, the teams went to a second overtime where UWEC scored with five minutes left to end the Blue Devil season. In all, the Blue Devils played a 55:48 second “mini-game” that lasted into the early morning hours.
2022-23: The Blue Devils went 17-11-1 and advanced to the WIAC semifinals for the first time since the 2015-16 season. The 17 wins were the most since 2008-09 and the fourth most in program history. Matt Dahlseide, Peyton Hart, Trenten Heyde and Tyler Masternak were selected to the 2022-23 All-WIAC Team. Dahlseide, a junior forward from Maplewood, Minn., led the Blue Devils in scoring with 27 points. He recorded career-highs in both goals (eight) and assists (19). Hart, a sophomore center from Delafield, Wis., led the Blue Devils in goals and led the WIAC in hat tricks with three and total shots with 110. He led the entire country in one shorthanded goals, scoring five total.
2021-22: Five Blue Devils were named to the All-WIAC squad with freshman Dylan Rallis leading the way with a first team selection. Senior forwards Raphael Gosselin and Logan Nelson were honorable mention selections, as were goalies Zack Cloutier and Tyler Masternak.
2020-21: MacDonald's first season with the Blue Devils came in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and when the season opened in February, three months after the normal season opener, the team was ready and jumped out for a season-opening win. The Blue Devils had four players named to the 2020-21 All-WIAC team, with Raphael Gosselin and Zack Cloutier earning first team honors and Logan Nelson and Joey Petronack earning honorable mention selection.
BEFORE UW-STOUT
Curry College (2016-20) During his time at Curry, the team has steadily improved each season, posting a combined record of 64-31-9. He has coached 11 All-Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) selections and in the 2018-19 season his power play was ranked third in the nation, scoring on 27.4 percent of their opportunities. While at Curry, MacDonald was responsible for recruiting, strength and conditioning, power play, video analysis, analytics, and coaching the defense.
Wentworth Institute of Technology (2015-16) He helped guide a young Leopards team to the ECAC Northeast semifinals.
PLAYING CAREER
Mississippi RiverKings -SPHL (2012-13) played in 34 games scoring 13 goals and 19 assists for 32 points lead the team to the playoffs.
Huntsville Havoc - SPHL (2009-13) Played 184 games over three and half seasons with the Havoc and was captain in 2010-11, and 12-13. scoring 57 goals, 88 assists for 145 points. In 2010 he scored the game-winning goal to give Huntsville its first ever SPHL Championship
New Mexico Scorpions - CHL (2008-09) played in 57 games, scoring three goals and eight assists for 11 points
Odessa Jackalopes - CHL (2007-08) played in 63 games, scoring 10 goals, 13 assists for 23 points
SUNY Geneseo (2003-07) In four seasons, the team posted a record of 67-33-11, winning the SUNYAC Championship in 2005 and 2006. Over his collegiate career, MacDonald appeared in 109 games and is among the school's all-time leaders in goals (61) and points (120).
PERSONAL
A native of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. MacDonald received his bachelor's degree from SUNY Geneseo in Business Administration in 2007 MacDonald and his wife Diana have two sons, Bennett and Miles.
