After an All-American career as a Blue Devil defensive back, Jed Schlegel is in his first year as a UW-Stout defensive back coach in 2020. Schlegel in 2019 earned D3football.com third team All-American honors after intercepting five passes to tie for the WIAC lead and was tied for 19th in the NCAA Division III in interceptions per game and tied for 16th nationally in total interceptions. Schlegel had three interceptions in the season-finale against UW-Eau Claire, becoming the first Blue Devil to make three interceptions in a single game since 2003. A 2019 first team all-WIAC pick, Schlegel tied for the team lead in pass break-ups with seven and was third in the WIAC in passes defended with 12. He forced one fumble, recovered a fumble and scored a two-point defensive extra-point when he took a lateral the distance.Â
In 2018, Schlegel was selected WIAC defensive player of the week and to D3football.com team of the week after recording 10 tackles, four solo, had two pass breakups and his second interception of the season in a 26-20 win over UW-Eau Claire on Sept. 29, 2018. Schlegel throughout his career showed a knack for the ball and in 2017 he scored his first collegiate touchdown after scooping up a blocked punt and returned it 47 yards for a score. That same season, Schlegel batted down a fourth-and-16 pass attempt with 46 seconds remaining to preserve 25-22 win over fourth-ranked St. Thomas.
