Clayt Birmingham was named the Blue Devils’ 20th head football coach in June 2010 and holds a 60-80 (.429) record.
 

UW-STOUT (2007-Present)


In 15 seasons as head coach of the Blue Devils, Birmingham has become the programs second winningest coach.  
 
He has coached 131 All-WIAC selections, 36 all-region selections, five All-Americans, three WIAC Player of the Year and 13 William Campbell Trophy semifinalists.
 
In the classroom, Birmingham has coached 677 WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll selections, 63 National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society members and 27 CSC Academic All-District selections.

2024: The Blue Devils went 6-5, 4-3 for their first winning season since 2017 and qualified for postseason play for the first time since 2000. Stout played in the Culver’s Isthmus Bowl falling 35-32 to Wheaton. Stout played seven games against ranked opponents, defeating #16 Dickinson State, #8 Whitewater and #13 Oshkosh. Stout’s 29-27 win over Whitewater, was the Blue Devils first over the Warhawks since 2001. Stout had 12 players named All-WIAC and Luke Cool, Luke Parzyck, Brooks Brewer and Will Hammen all were named D3football.com all-region. In WIAC play, Stout allowed just six sacks, was a perfect 27-27 in the redzone, and had the number one scoring offense. Adam Moen (3013) became the first Blue Devil to throw for over 3000 yards since the 1998 season. Stout scored the most points (370) in school history
Luke Cool, a senior kicker from Franklin, Wis., was named second-team AP All-American and second-team D3football.com All-American to cap off an impressive record-breaking career. In addition, he was named 2024 D3football.com First-Team All-Region and being named the 2024 WIAC Co-Special Teams Player of the Year and first-team All-WIAC.In 2024, he led all of Division III with 21 made field goals, a school record and most in the WIAC since the 2011 season. He also has made 41 PAT's and led the league in scoring with 104 points.

2023: The Blue Devils went 4-6 in 2023. Stout faced five opponents that were ranked or receiving votes in the top-25 polls, including two ranked in the top-10. Stout had a three-game stretch scoring over 40 points and was third in the league in passing yards per game, totaling just under 300 a game. Stout won their eighth straight “War on 94” trophy with a 38-13 win at UW-Eau Claire. The Blue Devils had 10 players named to the All-WIAC team. Five players named to the Region 6 All-Region team and Will Hammen received All-American honors. Arthur Cox set a school record for career kickoff return yard average with 25.8 yards per ret. Gervase Thompson received the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete award. 

2022: The Blue Devils went 5-5 in the 2022 campaign. In Week two, Levy Hamer caught a 62-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with 15 seconds left in the game to stun host Gustavus Adolphus 28-25. The next week The Blue Devils set a school record for points in a game with a 66-6 home win over Crown College. The next weekend Stout broke that record again with a 73-29 home win over UW-Eau Claire to claim their 7th straight “War on 94” trophy. Stout totaled nearly 700 yards of offense. Stout had their third blowout win with a 55-0 victory over Stevens Point. The Blue Devils had their second walk-off win of the season when they beat No. 22 Platteville in triple overtime. 24-22. In all the Blue Devils played four teams ranked in the top-25. The Blue Devils had eight players earn 10 spot s on the 2022 All- WIAC Team. Five earned first team honors, one second team selection and four were selected to the honorable mention squad. Arthur Cox was named to three teams as well as being named the Special Teams Player of the Year. Cox earned first team honors as a wide receiver and return specialist and was named honorable mention all-purpose back. Sean Borgerding was named first-team All-WIAC to lead the WIAC in passing for the second consecutive season. He became the school’s all-time passing leader in attempts, completions, yards and touchdowns. Levy Hamer was first-team wide receiver for the second straight season he was second in the WAIC in receiving yards He holds the school record with 34 career touchdown receptions. Cannon Griner was second in the WIAC in total tackles with 92 to earn first-team honors. Hamer, Cox and Griner were named all-region.
 
2021: The 2021 team saw eight players earn All-WIAC honors, with wide receiver Levy Hamer earned D3football.com All-Region 6 second team honors after leading the conference in receiving yards and hauling in 12 touchdowns. Hamer was a first team All-WIAC pick, as was fellow wide receiver Arthur Cox, who earned first team honors an all-purpose back.
 
2020: Season canceled due to COVID-19.
 
2019: The 2019 team saw nine Blue Devils earn All-WIAC honors, with defensive back Jed Schlegel earning D3football.com All-America and All-West Region. Punter Alec Benzinger joined Schlegel on the All-Region team and was the top punter in the WIAC. Kevion McDonald earned first team all-conference honors and wrapped up his career finishing third on the school's all-time receiving list.
 
2018:  Offensive lineman Caleb Adams, running back Keyshawn Carpenter, kicker Drew Pearson and punter Shawn Magee were first team all-conference picks. The Blue Devils had 14 total selected to the all-conference teams. Adams earned second team all-region honors and academic all-district honors.
 
2017: The Blue Devils exploded onto the national scene with a 25-22 win over fourth-ranked St. Thomas in September. Stout vaulted to the D3football.com Top-25 poll and ranked as high as 22nd and moved into the AFCA Top 25 during the season. The Blue Devils' defense led the WIAC in rushing defense, passing defense, total defense and opponent third down conversions. Stout ranked nationally in the NCAA Division III, finishing 10th in red-zone defense and eighth in third down conversions allowed. Stout had three players named to the All-WIAC first team - Caleb Adams, Isaiah Hardy, and Josh Johnson - and Adams was an all-region selection at offensive line. In total, Stout had 13 players chosen as All-WIAC
 
2016: The Blue Devils produced three All-WIAC selections in place kicker Drew Pearson, who was also the WIAC co-special teams player of the year, punter Clark Riedel and offensive lineman Kane'ala Atchison-Keolanui. Pearson had a breakout year, earning first team D3football.com and second team AFCA All-America honors. Pearson was a finalist for the Fred Mitchell Award. Riedel and Atchison-Keolanui earned all-region honors.
 
2015: The Blue Devils averaged 267.7 yards per contest through the air. Offensively, the Blue Devil averaged nearly 400 yards of total offense (396.9). Stout scored more than 30 points in five games. Kujak inked a contract to play professionally in Germany. Offensive lineman Kane'ala Atchison-Keolanui was a first team All-WIAC pick and earned all-region honors. Wide receiver Brian Alvarez and defensive back Collin Laursen were second team All-WIAC choices. Four players earned honorable mention honors. Collin Laursen was an academic all-region selection and was a National Football Foundation Honor Society selection.
 
2014:  Tanner Kuehn earned first team All-WIAC honors as an all-purpose player. Linebacker Luke Bakkum, who led the league in tackles and tackles for loss and was second in sacks, and defensive lineman Jamie Rohrig earned all-district honors, Six Blue Devils were named to the All-WIAC team. Defensive back Tyler Naatz was a National Football Foundation Honor Society selection.
 
2013: The Blue Devils had nine selections to the All-WIAC team. Offensive lineman Devon Greiber earned all-region honors. Greiber played in post-season all-star games. Tailback Adolfo Pacheco gained 965 rushing yards, the most by a freshman since the 2000 season, and the most by a true freshman in more than 40 years. Defensive lineman David Goebel was a National Football Foundation Honor Society selection.
 
2012: The Blue Devils had seven selections to the All-WIAC team and running back Eric Brown rushed his way into the UW-Stout record book, finishing his two-year career as the 15th leading rusher with 1391 yards. Tight end Josh Peterson wrapped up his career and was a National Football Foundation Honor Society selection and played in the annual Aztec Bowl.
 
2011: The Blue Devils highlighted the season with 10 selections to the All-WIAC team as Stout went 5-5 overall. The Blue Devils picked up their first win over UW-Stevens Point since the 2003 starting offensive lineman Tyler Butzler, an all-region selection, was in NFL camps in the spring. The squad also logged more than 680 hours of community service throughout the school year.
 
2010: The 2010 season saw UW-Stout go 6-4 overall and finish third in the WIAC. Eleven players earned all-conference honors and tight end Patrick Mengelkoch was an All-American as well as being named to the AFCA/Allstate Good Works Team.
 
2007-09: Birmingham spent his first three seasons at Stout as the defensive coordinator. He took the Blue Devil defense from the eighth ranked defense in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) to second in 2009. Of 235 NCAA Division III teams, Stout’s defense ranked 42nd in 2009.
 

BEFORE UW-STOUT


Emporia State (2001-03, 2005-06) Birmingham coached five seasons at Division II Emporia State in Kansas where he was the defensive coordinator and worked individually with the defensive line and defensive backs. Under Birmingham's direction, the Hornets defense allowed only 284.7 yards per game in 2003. The Hornets' defense ranked 17th nationally in 2003 and posted a record of 9-3, advancing to the NCAA Division II playoffs
 
Western Michigan (2000, 2004) Birmingham spent two seasons at NCAA Division I Western Michigan, as the defensive secondary coach in 2004 and as a graduate assistant defensive coach in 2000. The 2000 Broncos were 9-3 and won the West Division of the Mid-American Conference. His duties included coaching the defensive secondary, film breakdown and defensive quality control.
 
University of Northern Michigan (1998-99) graduate assistant receivers coach at Northern Michigan.
 
He spent the summer of 1998 as the head coach of Stockholm's Swedish National Championship team in the European Federation of American Football, leading the team to an 11-3 record.
 
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (1996-97) Birmingham coached the secondary and outside linebackers, including the Detroit Lions 1999 sixth round draft pick Clint Kriewaldt.
 

PLAYING CAREER


University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (1992-96) A four-year starter, Birmingham was a two-time All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) defensive back at UW-Stevens Point (1995, 1994). In 1994, Birmingham was the WIAC interceptions co-leader.
 

PERSONAL


A Sturgeon Bay, Wis. native, and a graduate of Southern Door High School. Birmingham was inducted into the Southern Door High School Hall of Fame in 2013. Birmingham and his wife, Therese, reside in Menomonie with their three daughters.
