CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Wisconsin–Stout softball team split a pair of games Saturday, run-ruling Western New England University 10-0 in five innings before falling 7-6 in eight innings to Calvin University.
Game 1: UW-Stout 10, Western New England 0 (5 innings)
UW-Stout erupted offensively and backed it up with dominant pitching in a five-inning shutout victory over Western New England.
The Blue Devils scored in three consecutive innings, plating four runs in the second, three in the third, and three more in the fourth to build the 10-0 advantage.
Stephanie Kuhn led the power surge, going 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and two runs scored.
Elly Holden delivered the big swing of the game with a three-run homer and finished with three RBI.
Rayni Bresnahan added a pair of hits and drove in two runs,
Sarah Wilkins added two hits, while
Payton Dolecki chipped in an RBI and stole a base.
Abbey Dusterhoft also recorded an RBI for the Blue Devils.
In the circle, Wilkins tossed four shutout innings allowing just one hit to pick up the win.
Game 2: Calvin 7, UW-Stout 6 (8 innings)
The Blue Devils dropped a tightly contested extra-inning game to Calvin in the nightcap.
Stout battled back-and-forth with the Knights throughout the game and finished with six runs on seven hits. Calvin collected 17 hits in the contest and eventually broke through with two runs in the eighth inning to secure the 7-6 victory.
Calvin jumped out early with two runs in the first, and extended the lead to 4-0 in the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth,
Donna D'Addabbo tripled down the rightfield line to score
Rayni Bresnahan.
Stephanie Kuhn followed with an RBI Double to left center and
Abbey Dusterhoft doubled to center to bring the Blue Devils within one at 4-3. Calivn added a run in the top of the fifth and Stout scored twice in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 5 runs apiece. In extras, Calvin plated two in the top of the eighth,
Elly Holden singled in Kuhn to pull Stout within one, but the Blue Devils couldn't push the tying run across.
