WHITEWATER — The University of Wisconsin Stout Polytechnic men's soccer team fell to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at Robert W. Fiskum Field. The Blue Devils generated nine of their 11 shots in the second half, including a goal from Logan Bergien.
Eddie Puglisi made six saves in goal for UW-Stout, including five in the first half. The Blue Devils recorded three shots on goal, with Bergien, Trey White and Patrick Zich each putting an attempt on frame.
Whitewater opened the scoring in the 14th minute, but Puglisi kept the Blue Devils within one with several key saves throughout the opening half. Stout's first shot on goal came in the 19th minute when White's attempt was saved by the Whitewater goalkeeper. Ryker Rivard added a shot late in the half as the Blue Devils entered halftime trailing 1-0.
Stout continued to generate chances early in the second half. Max Meeh and Nikola Dabetic each recorded shots before the Blue Devils began applying increased pressure. Rivard added two more attempts, including one that led to a Stout corner, as the Blue Devils continued to look for the equalizer.
Whitewater extended its lead to 2-0 in the 77th minute, but UW-Stout answered just under three minutes later. Jack Poole and Kevin Lowery combined to set up Bergien, who scored on a long-range attempt in the 80th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Warhawks responded in the 83rd minute to restore their two-goal advantage. The Blue Devils continued to push forward late, with Alex Thayer recording two shots and Lowery adding another. Zich put a final shot on goal with 15 seconds remaining, but Whitewater goalkeeper Austin Waite made the save to preserve the 3-1 final.
UW-Stout is now 4-4-2 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play. The Blue Devils return home Tuesday, Oct. 6, hosting the College of St. Scholastica at 7 p.m. at Nelson Field.
