MENOMONIE, Wis. – The UW-Stout women's basketball team battled toe-to-toe with No. 7 UW-Whitewater for much of the afternoon, but the Warhawks pulled away late to secure a 72–53 victory Saturday at Johnson Fieldhouse.
The Blue Devils came out with strong energy and led after the opening quarter, holding Whitewater to just 11 points in the first 10 minutes. UW-Stout continued to trade baskets with the nationally ranked Warhawks throughout the first half, trailing by just one at the break as neither team was able to create separation.
UW-Stout remained within striking distance through the third quarter, as the game featured seven lead changes and stayed tight into the final period. Whitewater began to gain momentum late in the third and carried it into the fourth, where the Warhawks used a decisive run to pull away and close out the win.
Rosella Wille turned in a strong all-around performance for the Blue Devils, finishing with 12 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and six steals. Mary Berg led UW-Stout in scoring with 17 points, while Maraya Wiltrout added 10 points off efficient shooting.
