PLATTEVILLE - The UW-Stout volleyball team bounced back with a strong showing at the Williams Fieldhouse on Saturday, sweeping MSOE in straight sets before outlasting Marian in five sets to move to 13-4 on the season.
Stout 3, MSOE 0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-10)
The Blue Devils kicked off the day with a dominant performance against MSOE, hitting .333 as a team while limiting the Raiders to a -.026 hitting percentage in the straight-set victory.
Brooke McCune paced Stout tallying 13 kills with an efficient attack percentage on 23 attempts. Setters
Lainey Todd and
Nadia Marchionda directed the offense with 14 assists apiece. Defensively,
Brynn Hessel was a force at the net, recording three blocks and four kills.
Kailey Kline led with 13 digs.
In the opening set, Stout surged ahead with an 12-4 run, to win 25-14. The second set saw the Blue Devils pull away late, to secure a 25-18 victory. Stout cruised in the third set, hitting .417 and holding MSOE to a -.200 hitting mark for a 25-10 clincher.
Stout 3, Marian 2 (23-25, 25-12, 20-25, 25-18, 15-8)
In the second match, Stout rallied from dropping the first and third sets to defeat Marian in five, hitting .241 overall while recording 15 team blocks and 71 digs.
McCune starred again with a monster performance, recording 24 kills on .283 hitting, 16 digs, three aces, and two blocks.
Emma Barton added nine kills and four blocks,
Devyn Masloski had 7 kills, and
Viv Heidt contributed 8 blocks. Kline led the back row with 19 digs, Marchionda had 11 digs, 17 assists and a service ace, and
Lainey Todd had 24 assists and eight digs.
The first set was tightly contested, but Marian pulled out a 25-23 win on a 7-2 run to close. The Blue Devils responded emphatically in set two, jumping to a 12-4 lead and cruising 25-12 behind McCune's four kills in the set. Marian regained momentum in set three, building an early 13-3 advantage en route to a 25-20 victory. Stout flipped the script in set four, opening with a 7-1 run and holding off a late Marian charge for a 25-18 win. The decisive fifth set was all Stout, as the Blue Devils raced to an 8-5 lead and closed on a 7-3 run for the 15-8 clincher, with McCune totaling seven kills in the frame.
Stout returns to action next week with WIAC play, hosting UW-Eau Claire on October 1.
