Box Score ST. PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Stout Blue Devils (2-1) put on a dominant offensive and defensive performance on Saturday, dismantling the University of Northwestern (0-3) with a final score of 56-13 at Reynolds Field. The Blue Devils' balanced attack was on full display, as they posted 521 yards of total offense, controlling the game right from the start.
After a quick exchange of touchdowns in the first quarter, UW-Stout's defense settled in and the offense went to work. Quarterback Adam Moen had 23 completions on 27 attempts for 272 yards and three touchdowns. Moen also added a rushing touchdown.
The Blue Devils' ground game was equally effective. Running back Zoe McDowell led the way with 82 yards on 12 carries, while Chandler Ross found the end zone twice on the ground. Overall, Stout had 10 different rushers totaling 188 yards on the ground.
The Blue Devils found their rhythm early in the first quarter with an 8-play, 52-yard drive culminating in a 4-yard touchdown run by Ross. After Northwestern answered with their long touchdown pass, Stout put up three more touchdowns before halftime, including two through the air, giving them a commanding 42-7 lead at the break.
Moen found Davonte Evans for a 38 yard touchdown. Stout then took advantage of a blocked punt when Moen found Cole Filand in the back corner of the endzone to put Stout up 21-7.
Chandler Ross scored his second touchdown of the half on a two-yard run early in the second quarter. Later Moen would run the ball in for a score and then would find Evans again with two minutes left in the opening half to give Stout a commanding halftime lead. Evans finished with eight catches for 107 yards and two scores.
Late in the third quarter, Luke Sedin found Keon Maggit for an eight yard touchdown. And Jacob Royse scored his first touchdown from a yard out, capping an 11-play 67 yard drive that ate up nearly six minutes off the fourth quarter clock.
Defensively, Stout had five sacks and 13 tackles for loss as they held Northwestern to just 204 yards of offense.
The Blue Devils are off next week and will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 4 when they travel to Eau Claire, Wis. for a rivalry game with the Blugolds at Carson Park.
