ST. PAUL - The UW-Stout Blue Devils (13-9) split a non-conference doubleheader with the St. Catherine Wildcats (9-14) on Sunday, April 6, at St. Kate's Field in St. Paul, Minn. The Blue Devils dominated the opener with a 12-3 victory, powered by a potent offense, before falling in a tightly contested nightcap, 3-2.
Game 1: UW-Stout 12, St. Catherine 3
UW-Stout jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in the first game, racking up 14 hits en route to a convincing win. The Blue Devils struck first in the opening inning, capitalizing on a St. Catherine error.
Payton Dolecki reached on the miscue and scored on a groundout by
Donna D'Addabbo, followed by
Rayni Bresnahan's RBI groundout to make it 2-0.
The Blue Devils struck for two runs again in the third, with Bresnahan and
Stephanie Kuhn delivering key hits to push the lead to 4-0. The fourth inning proved decisive, as UW-Stout plated five runs, highlighted by Kuhn's RBI walk and Lexi Rohl's run-scoring single. The Blue Devils capped the scoring with a three-run seventh, sparked by Bresnahan's two-RBI single.
Bresnahan led the charge, finishing 3-for-5 with four RBI, while Kuhn went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a double.
Abbey Dusterhoft also shone, going 3-for-4 and scoring twice.
Anna Blanford earned the win in relief, tossing 3.1 innings and allowing just one unearned run on six hits.
Game 2: St. Catherine 3, UW-Stout 2
The second game was a pitcher's duel that came down to the wire, with St. Catherine edging out UW-Stout in the seventh inning. The Wildcats took an early 2-0 lead, scoring once in each of the first two innings.
UW-Stout fought back, tying the game at 2-2. Dolecki's RBI single in the third cut the deficit to 2-1, and D'Addabbo's double in the sixth brought home
Emma Fortier to even the score. However, St. Catherine responded in the bottom of the seventh. Mansell led off with a double and later scored the walk-off run on Brogan's single, securing the 3-2 victory.
For UW-Stout, Dolecki finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, and D'Addabbo went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Blanford took the loss, allowing three runs on nine hits over 6.1 innings.
