MENOMONIE – Mai Nou Vang and
Riley Schulte each scored five goals to lead the UW-Stout women's lacrosse team to a 16-12 win over Southwestern (Tex.) at Nelson Field Friday afternoon.
The game started with Southwestern taking an early 1-0 lead via Ana Vines at 13:20 in the first quarter. UW-Stout quickly responded, as
Brinley Tonn tied the score at 11:30, sparking a 7-1 run to close the period, with Vang and Schulte each scoring twice to give Stout a 7-2 lead. The second quarter saw Southwestern fight back, outscoring Stout 4-2, with Cecilia Cantu netting two goals for the Pirates, narrowing the gap to 9-6 at halftime.
The third quarter proved pivotal, as Stout regained momentum with a 5-3 scoring edge. Vang opened with two quick goals, and Schulte added another, pushing the lead to 12-6. Southwestern answered with two goals, but Thomas' strike and Vang's fifth goal of the day gave Stout a 14-9 advantage heading into the final frame.
In the fourth, Southwestern battled to close the gap, scoring two quick goals to make it 14-11. However, Stout sealed the game with late goals from Thomas and
Abigail Todey, to secure the 16-12 final. Vang also contributed two assists, while
Loryn Tornell added a goal and two assists, and Tonn recorded a goal and an assist.
Stout outshot Southwestern 34-28, with 18 shots on goal to the Pirates' 14. Both teams recorded nine saves, with
Emilia Bullock earning the win for Stout. The Blue Devils capitalized on five of seven free-position shots and won 17 of 32 draw controls, with Vang and Tonn combining for 12.
UW-Stout will host No. 17 Colorado College on Sunday, April 13 for a 10 a.m. game at Nelson Field.
