ST. PAUL, Minn. — The UW-Stout men's hockey team responded in a big way Saturday night, earning a 3-2 overtime victory over Hamline University after dropping their season opener 4-1 to Saint Mary's the previous evening.
Freshman Arhip Sidarovich provided the heroics, netting the game-winning goal at 2:58 of overtime — his first collegiate goal — to lift the Blue Devils to their first win of the young season.
Tristan Therrien opened the scoring just 82 seconds into the game off a setup from Evan Luxford, but Hamline answered midway through the first period. Nicholas Stevens reclaimed the lead for Stout early in the second on assists from Zachary Aprea-Ricard and Noah Tyrrell, before Hamline tied the contest once more on a power play later in the frame.
Stout goaltender Ryan Knight was sharp between the pipes, stopping 30 shots to secure the win, while the Blue Devils outshot the Pipers 39-32 overall. Luxford finished with two assists, including the helper on the overtime winner.
The victory evens UW-Stout's record at 1-1-0 heading into next weekend's home stand.
