Box Score DICKINSON, N.D. – The UW-Stout Football team survived a late fourth quarter rally to escape with a 22-20 win over Dickinson State University Saturday afternoon.
Leading 22-0 in the fourth quarter, the 16
th ranked DSU Bluehawks made a comeback over the final 9:38 and scored a touchdown with 13 seconds left to play to pull within two.
Dawson Goodman swatted away the Bluehawks game-tying two-point conversion attempt in the back of the endzone to preserve the win.
After a scoreless first quarter, two
Luke Cool field goals of 34 and 45 yards gave Stout a 6-0 lead.
Stout scored a touchdown with 1:11 left before halftime to double the lead.
Adam Moen found
Tucker Haakonson in the front left corner of the end zone. The two-point attempt fell short, and Stout led 12-0 at the half.
Stout forced a Bluehawk three-and-out to open the third and took advantage of a short punt. Starting the drive on the DSU 44, Stout quickly moved the ball to just outside the redzone and then Moen rolled left and found
Bennett Lecher running across the field to the front corner of the endzone to give Stout a 19-0 lead.
Cool's third field goal of the day, from 27 yards out gave Stout a 22-0 lead heading into the fourth.
DSU finally was able to capitalize on a drive and got on the board at the 9:38 mark of the fourth on a 54-yard catch and run to cap a quick two-play drive to put the Bluehawks on the board at 19-7.
DSU forced another Blue Devil punt, and three plays later found the endzone on a 43-yard touchdown pass to bring the Bluehawks within 8 with 6:02 left to play.
DSU forced a three-and-out and bad snap on the punt gave the Bluehawks the ball at the Stout 19-yard line.
DSU moved the ball to the seven, but
Braxton Munnikhuysen intercepted the Bluehawks pass in the endzone and returned it out to the 25 with 3:43 left on the clock.
But Stout was unable to ice the game, DSU forced another put and took over on their 27-yard line with 2:03 left to play.
Stout forced a fourth down with the ball near midfield, but a pass interference penalty on a hail mary attempt gave DSU new life. DSU scored with 13 seconds left to pull within 22-20 but were unable to convert the two-point attempt and Stout held on for the win.
Adam Moen finished 18-30 for 191 yards and two touchdowns. He also carried the ball 16 time for 32 yards.
Davonte Evans made seven receptions for 76 yards.
The Blue Devil defense intercepted Madler four times, had three sacks and eight tackles for loss.
Carter Fonger led the Blue Devils with seven tackles, a sack and two tackles for loss.
Blaine Seidl made six tackles with a sack and tow TFL's.
Brooks Brewer, Munnikhuysen,
AJ Hogan and
Gavin Goodman all had interceptions.

The Blue Devils return home to host the University of Northwestern (Minn.) on Saturday, Sept. 21. Kickoff from Williams Stadium is set for 6 p.m. Before the game UW-Stout will hold a short ceremony to honor their seniors.
